Dark blood trick… This is mainly for junior anaesthetists who were tested by senior surgeons and senior anaesthetists The surgeons would say during a procedure that the patitt et hrs blood looked dark… This was… - before ETCO2 - before Sp02 - automatic BP monitoring In response to being called out, Anaesthetists used to monitor their patients using simple and very basic techniques such as - cap refill - looking at a patients total presentations - manual BP taking Anaesthetists could do one of two critical actions - panic - hold their breath for 15 seconds and go through a drill where - the patient’s exhaust tubes were checked - the tube was checked in the three positions (epigastric, left axilla and right axilla) - palpating a radial pulse to ensure it matched the ECG - the oesophagial stethoscope was in sequence with both the ECG and the pulse If this was all in order - then removing the patient from the ventilator and bagging them to ensure they had excellent return lung compliance which then ensured that all was in fact well. The surgeon would then say the blood looked pink again. This was a well known trick by both senior anaesthetists and surgrons to test a recently graduate’s suitability to join the anaesthetic fraternity. Need to know more? Then please PM us for a few case histories.

Off shore retrievals We just can’t fathom why critically ill/injured Australians are left languishing in well meaning off shore holiday hospitals just for a lack of funding. In the past, Kiah has proudly shaken up these ‘providers’ in high level international tender processes. This current policy of non provision of life saving retrieval services smacks of the failed American health care models of the 80’s where patients were shuffled between hospitals regardless of their illness just because of lack of insurance. Now it seems that some patients must wait for crowd funding for a life saving trip home. Their families anguish is visceral, tragic and above all - avoidable. Our military seemingly don’t rescue their citizens off shore - and our PM gives millions away while traversing the globe on whistle stop pre-election handshaking visits. Legal loop holes in uncaring and fine print providers of insurance cover is a deadly wake up call. Seems the almighty dollar has replaced caring. We just don’t know how this industry lives with itself while hugging their ‘in the black’ balance sheet(s). Surely, as health care providers, we are somewhat better than this? Thoughts?

💕 They shall grow not old as we that are left grow old: Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning We will remember them. Lest we Forget. We encourage all Australians to partake in a minute of silence at 11:00 am, remembering the resilience and heroic actions of those who have fought for our country. #LestWeForget
