What is personalised medicine? 🥼🧬 Personalised medicine is where a treatment plan is specifically tailored to the individual patient. The implementation of personalised targeted treatment to clinical care in the UK has significantly improved treatment outcomes for many cancer patients, and in Australia research into personalised and targeted medicine is at the forefront, however this has not been incorporated into clinical care in Australia. Treatment for women diagnosed with Ovarian Cancer has changed very little in the last 30 years. Meanwhile advances in treatment of other types of cancer has resulted in significantly improved survival rates for patients. The LLRF support ongoing research headed by Dr Manuela Klingler-Hoffmann and Professor Peter Hoffmann to find the best currently available chemo therapy drug for the individual patient. This research takes patient tumour cells and puts them against different chemotherapy drugs in the laboratory before starting treatment. This will allow for more effective treatment as it becomes possible to identify which treatment is likely to be more effective against the individual patient’s cancer.
