Invests in technologies critical to reducing carbon emissions from industry.

About us

Low Emission Technology Australia (LETA) is an investor in technologies critical to reducing carbon emissions from industry. Our collective goal under the Paris Agreement is a zero emission future. But to get there we need to close a widening divide. Low emission technologies are critical to achieving this goal and will help manage the emissions generated by industries and the way we live. Until recently LET Australia was called COAL21. We changed our name because Low Emission Technology Australia much better reflects what we do, which is invest in technologies that significantly reduce carbon emissions. The innovations of these technologies can reduce and remove existing and future sources of industrial emissions. This includes from coal fired and other electricity generation, steel and cement manufacturing, mining processes and other future energy sources, such as hydrogen. The technology doesn’t discriminate against where carbon comes from, but will be critical to reaching a zero carbon emissions future. Since 2006 Australia’s black coal producers have committed $550 million to identify, research and develop technologies that can make a real difference to how we produce energy, steel and other materials so that the carbon dioxide can be captured and permanently stored, prevented, or reused in other applications. LETA continues this important work.

  • LETA Talks COP29 Azerbaijan:   Some important outcomes were achieved during the 29th Conference of the Parties (COP) to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UN Climate Change), which was held in Baku, Azerbaijan, and concluded in the early hours of Sunday, 24 November.   In an uncertain global environment, COP29 decisions have set a pathway for:   - 𝐈𝐧𝐜𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐞𝐝 𝐂𝐥𝐢𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐅𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞: Supporting developing nations in climate mitigation, adaptation, and resilience efforts.   - 𝗔𝗱𝘃𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀 𝗼𝗻 𝗔𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗹𝗲 𝟲 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗣𝗮𝗿𝗶𝘀 𝗔𝗴𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁: After nearly a decade of negotiations, agreements were reached to enable international carbon credit trading, supported by UN-backed market and non-market initiatives. Learn more here: https://lnkd.in/dxJ9X4Dw   While negotiations were extended and challenging, the agreed package is a step forward.   For Australia, the opportunity now lies in collaborating with funding providers like LETA and making decisions to enable international carbon credit trading. This mechanism can offer a cost-effective way to amplify emissions reduction efforts.   At LETA, we are committed to decarbonisation through collaboration and working closely with governments, industries, and international partners to reduce emissions across the entire lifecycle of hard-to-abate sectors.

  • LETA supports the Government of Western Australia's Carbon Capture Utilisation and Storage (CCUS) Action Plan.  The Action Plan, announced yesterday by the Western Australian Premier Roger Cook, marks the first state-led approach of its kind in Australia and provides a model for the Federal Government as well as other Australian states and territories to support this important technology. Western Australia’s Action Plan will accelerate the CCUS industry by attracting investment, enhancing policy certainty and supporting the development of new and emerging technology.  The Western Australian Government also announced $26million in funding for two local CCUS projects which are being developed to prevent millions of tonnes of CO2 from reaching the atmosphere.  “LETA encourages the Federal Government, as well as other Australian states and territories to follow the example set by Western Australia, and by nations around the world to support the adoption of this vital technology that delivers a net zero pathway and protects jobs and industry.” - LETA CEO, Mark McCallum LETA remains committed to collaborating with government, industry, and our international trading partners to further drive the global deployment of CCS. • We are pleased to announce that we have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Kawasaki Heavy Industries, Ltd. formalising our shared commitment to reducing emissions from heavy industry. This MOU underscores our mutual goal to advance the development and deployment of Post Combustion Capture (PCC) technology. PCC technology reduces emissions from heavy industry by capturing CO2 at the emissions source and preventing them from entering the atmosphere. “We are proud to have formalised our working relationship with Kawasaki. Kawasaki is a leading innovator in low emission technology and we share a commitment to a net zero future for heavy industry." Mark McCallum, LETA CEO. At LETA, we are committed to decarbonisation through collaboration and work closely with governments, industries, and international partners to reduce emissions across the lifecycle of hard-to-abate sectors. • AUSTRALIA TAKES AN IMPORTANT STEP FORWARD IN THE GLOBAL EFFORT TO REDUCE CARBON EMISSIONS LETA supports the ratification of an important piece of legislation that will allow for the transboundary movement of CO2 for the purposes of offshore geological storage. The ratification, which will come into effect on 7 November 2024, affirms the 2009 amendment to the London Protocol through the Environment Protection (Sea Dumping) (Announcement of Provisional Application) Instrument 2024. The amendment will allow Australia to work with international trading partners to permanently and safely store CO2 to prevent it from entering the atmosphere. It will also support Australia to play to our geological strengths and develop as a regional carbon capture and storage (CCS) offshore storage location. The Australian Government, and the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water (DCCEEW) can now officially start working with countries in the region, such as Japan and Korea, to put in place the bilateral agreements necessary to facilitate transboundary CCS projects. “By committing to the amendment, Australia not only encourages new industrial and trade developments but also strengthens our critical regional ties with nations like South Korea, Japan, Singapore, Timor Leste, and other strategic partners who are looking to abate their emissions but have limited domestic storage potential.” - Mark McCallum, LETA CEO Read more from our Media Release here: https://lnkd.in/gYi_cPE2 Find out more about the legislation here: https://lnkd.in/gHBJpfcQ

  • That’s a wrap on this year’s International Mining and Resources Conference (IMARC)! Thank you to everyone who visited the LETA stand and met with our team. We were excited to connect with industry peers, and technology pioneers, and learn about the latest advancements in mining and sustainability. The conference was filled with highlights, including expert insights from around the globe on emerging opportunities, decarbonisation strategies, and cutting-edge mining innovations. A standout moment for LETA was seeing our Head of Government Relations and Policy, Ben Rice, deliver a keynote on Technological Solutions to Mitigate Climate Change—an integral part of LETA’s mission. Ben underscored the importance of addressing ventilation air methane (VAM) emissions from mining operations, showcased LETA’s impactful projects in this area, and outlined the promising potential of these technologies for real emissions reduction across the sector. He also shared LETA’s vision for carbon stewardship in decarbonising heavy industry. At LETA, we believe in decarbonisation through collaboration and will continue to seek new opportunities and work with our industry peers to achieve meaningful emission reductions across the hard to abate sector.
