Creating optimism in the lives of people with disabilities or facing disadvantage
About us
Making Waves Foundation exists to offer opportunities to people facing disability or disadvantage. Using sailing as a tool, MWF regularly acts as a catalyst for change, where individuals develop a more optimistic outlook and enjoy personal growth and improved life outcomes. Since its inception in 1994, MWF has taken more than 42,000 people sailing, and competed in 18 Sydney to Hobart Yacht Races. Since 2003, MWF has also held the world record for the non-stop and unassisted circumnavigation of Australia. MWF relies on a platform of volunteers to run its programs. Through participation, volunteers raise their life satisfaction and well-being while learning new skills and giving back to society. MWF's programs are inclusive, supportive and challenging. The focus is on working as a team to find solutions to problems. Regular participation and connection with our mentors raises self-esteem and self-confidence, and improves life skills. Want to Create Optimism? You can make change happen by: * Volunteering your time * Making a donation * Buying a boat in our annual Making Waves Regatta * Asking us about sponsorship opportunities

NEWCASTLE 😁 Our purple containers were delivered to our site this week. It is a very exciting development and a first step in setting up our Wright of Passage site. Student trial days are scheduled for early December and we are taking applications from interested students. We officially launch our program early in Term 1, 2025 empowering youth experiencing disadvantage to acquire valuable trade and work ready skills, paving the way for their future success. We thank the Ian & Shirley Norman Foundation for their generous support in providing funding for our essential resources that includes our containers, tools and a dedicated workspace at their headquarters. We can’t wait to officially launch our program and welcome our first intake of students. I wonder what the students will name their first Rainbow Dinghy? ℹ www.makingwaves.au ✉ info@makingwaves.au #youthdevelopment #makingwaves #isnf #newcastle #boatbuilding #rainbowdinghy

The Making Waves Staff and Board met face-to-face for an inaugural 2-day workshop that reviewed everything from strategy to programs to organisational culture. It was great to get everyone in the same room and talk about how to streamline our operating procedures and ensure we continue to deliver the best sailing opportunities for people living with disability or experiencing disadvantage. The next steps will be to consolidate the ideas that came out of the group sessions and develop advisory groups that will consist of staff, board members and volunteers alike. As an organisation that prioritizes its volunteers as much as our participants, we feel this is a crucial step to developing a positive and collaborative culture as we head into 2025. If anyone is interested in joining these groups, please email info@makingwaves.au for more information. #makingwavesfoundation #MWF #sailingfordisability #teamworkmakesthedreamwork #windsofopportunity

Exciting things happening at the Wright of Passage in Geelong ...🚢
Regional Manager Victoria I Creating optimism in the lives of people with disabilities or facing disadvantage through our unique sailing and on-dock programs
GEELONG - Wright of Passage Program👷⛵ On Wednesday, our Wright of Passage participants enjoyed an exciting excursion to the Spirit of Tasmania at Geelong Port🚢! Invited by Kevin Maddrell, Port Operations Manager, our group was given an insightful tour through the terminal before boarding. We were warmly welcomed on board by Michael, who guided us through the impressive ship. The highlight of the tour was stepping onto the bridge, where Captain Mark explained the complexities and skills involved in sailing a massive ship like the Spirit of Tasmania II. This was a fantastic opportunity for our participants to experience maritime operations firsthand, providing valuable insights into potential careers in the industry. With an annual transport of over 430,000 passengers and the employment of more than 600 staff, Spirit of Tasmania is a leading employer in the Greater Geelong Region. 🙏Thank you, Spirit of Tasmania, for hosting us and for such an informative morning! #WrightOfPassage #geelong #MakingWavesFoundation #MWF #personalgrowth #community
