Creating value for Margaret River growers and winemakers
About us
The Margaret River Wine Association (MRWA) is the peak body for Margaret River grape growers and winemakers. It was established in the late 1970’s as the Margaret River Grape Growers & Winemakers Association and was incorporated in 1982. In 1996 the Association registered a geographic boundary for the region and the Margaret River became one of the first three wine regions in Australia to have its boundaries legally defined as a Geographical Indication (GI) by the Australian government. The charter of the Association has remained constant over the years; primarily to represent the interests of the Margaret River wine industry and promote Margaret River fine wine. The MRWA is an independent, non-profit organisation, financed by its members with additional funding sourced from corporate members, sponsorship and grants. MRWA has more than 165 industry members and 50 associated Grape Grower and Commercial members.

As we approach the 6th and final session of the Wine Australia 2024 Margaret River Next Crop this Friday, it is great to read Natasha Lynch's reflections of session 5 last month. Thanks again to our presenters, Michael Hollingdale, Chair and Eloise Jarvis, Project Manager of Wines of Western Australia, and Finlayson Roadshow presenters Ned Hewitson of Wine Australia, Ali Laslett of Australian Grape & Wine and Will Taylor of Finlaysons.
The Next Crop Leadership Program with the Margaret River Wine Association has been an enriching experience, offering invaluable opportunities to connect with industry leaders, develop essential leadership skills, and expand our network. The program has deepened our understanding of the wine industry and fostered collaboration with like-minded individuals. A key focus has been on creating long-term projects that shape the future of Margaret River wine over the next 50 years, encouraging big-picture thinking and resilience. I’m grateful for the connections and insights gained and look forward to applying them to the industry’s future. In Session 5, we discussed the importance of "future-proofing" the Margaret River wine industry. As passionate leaders, we are committed to ensuring the region’s success for future generations. Michael Hollingdale, independent chair for Wines of Western Australia (WoWA) and an expert in succession planning, led the session. He emphasized the importance of understanding governance structures, knowing who to approach, and identifying funding opportunities, particularly for family-owned businesses. With more than 90% of Margaret River’s wine businesses family-owned, knowing how to facilitate smooth transitions of wineries, vineyards, and cellar doors is essential. Michael’s expertise has been invaluable, and his guidance will remain crucial beyond the program. Ely Jarvis, a guiding mentor throughout the program, delivered a thought-provoking presentation on "Social License to Operate – Margaret River and Western Australia." Ely sparked laughter with a lighthearted question about everyone’s first memory of wine, but the discussion quickly turned to the importance of trust, sustainability, and community engagement in the success of regional businesses. She highlighted the need to earn and maintain a social license to foster long-term partnerships and positive change. We were divided into groups to tackle sustainability challenges, focusing on practical solutions within the region. The session emphasized community involvement and funding opportunities, leading to creative discussions about how sustainability can be embedded in the region’s wine industry. We ended the day by attending the Finlaysons Roadshow, where we delved into key trends in the wine industry, including sustainability, consumer preferences, and innovations in production and marketing. The session also covered the legal and regulatory challenges facing the industry, particularly in relation to climate change and global market shifts. The insights gained reinforced the need for strategic thinking and adaptability as the industry navigates an evolving landscape. @wine-australia @margaret-river-wine-association #NextCropMargaretRiver

Last week, we had the pleasure of hosting guest chefs, sommeliers, and media from across the globe to collaborate with our local legends and celebrate everything that Margaret River has to offer. From indulgent, toes-in-the-sand lunches at Margaret’s Beach Club at Castle Bay, to iconic gatherings like the Grand Tasting at Howard Park Wines. Highlights included an impressive lineup of innovative winemakers at the New Wave Gathering, Cape Mentelle 42nd International Cabernet Tasting and Cullen Wines 39th International Chardonnay Tasting – truly something for everyone! A huge congratulations to the team at Mellen Events, We Are Gather and AHOY Management and our heartfelt thanks to Tourism Western Australia for the successful launch of the inaugural PAIR’D festival. We welcomed many special guests, including Micah A. Clark, Beverage Director for Raffles Hotels & Resorts in Boston. Micah earned his place here by winning the first Western Australia Wine Competition held in the USA, hosted by authors of How To Drink Australian, Jane Lopes and Jonathan Ross MS. His week in Margaret River included exploring the Cape to Cape track, savouring local dining, and attending Howard Park Wines 3rd Global Sparkling Tasting along with a variety of PAIR’D events across the region. A big thank you to all local producers and teams who made these experiences exceptional, as well as our sponsors Singapore Airlines and WA Wines to the World, for making Micah’s visit to Margaret River truly unforgettable!

Recently the Margaret River wine community gathered, beachside, for the second year of judging the region’s Best Rosé in this unique format, for the 2024 Endeavour Group Margaret River Wine Show. Judging was followed by a Beach Party celebration to honour last year’s Novonesis Rosé Trophy Winner, Japo Dalli Cani of McHenry Hohnen, with the presentation of his custom made ‘Pink Jacket’.

We are thrilled to have just completed a very successful China Wine Buyers Tour. The 11 delegates, visiting from mainland China as well as Hong Kong, represented businesses from Cathay Pacific, Little Red Book, The Wine Gallery, Winelane trading, Shanghai YuJie Wine Co & more! Our guests were involved in a range of educational Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon masterclasses, discussions around the regional Shiraz style and a seafood dinner to celebrate our SSB & SBS blends. During their 3 days in Margaret River, the guests were hosted on an immersive itinerary, prepared by Liz Mencel, Tony Fletcher, Amanda Whiteland and Grace Pigram, meeting winemakers, experiencing the breathtaking natural beauty and tasting a range of the region's fine wines that we hope to see available in China soon. A massive thank you to all the wineries and their teams that hosted our guests; Fraser Gallop Estate, Wills Domain, McHenry Hohnen , Leeuwin Estate, Lenton Brae and Howard Park Wines, and everyone that showcased their wines. Also a big thank you to Sean at Ovis Creative for translating and capturing their experience, Johnno at Wine for Dudes | Margaret River Wine Tours for keeping our guests safe on the road, Iszaac Webb at Undalup Association for a beautiful Welcome to Country ceremony. The China Wine Buyer tour was made possible through the support of the South West Development Commission, WA Wines to the World program which is coordinated by Wines of Western Australia in conjunction with Hydra Consulting.
