As reported in today’s Herald Sun, the Victorian Heart Institute and Victorian Heart Hospital are helping expand treatment options for people with high cholesterol that puts them at risk of heart attack or stroke, including world-first drugs for potentially deadly conditions. Monash University and Monash Health are collaborating on projects, known as the KRAKEN and BROOKLYN clinical trials, that aim to develop the first effective drug for two types of inherited genetic cholesterol that, until now, have had no effective treatment. Director of the Monash Victorian Heart Institute and Victorian Heart Hospital, Professor Stephen Nicholls, has presented KRAKEN and BROOKLYN at the American Heart Association Conference in Chicago. Professor Nicholls told the Herald Sun that developing drug treatments and improving patient outcomes is what the Victorian Heart Hospital is about. “We put a hospital on the campus at Monash University, we wanted to be leading innovation and this is a return on investment by the taxpayers of Victoria,” he said. “The fact that we can be leading things that have the potential to change the course of a disease for many patients is what this should all be about. “The hospital should be about providing world-class care for patients and about developing the solutions for the future.” Read more about how Monash-led research is expanding treatment options for high cholesterol: https://bit.ly/3Zf4IyK
