"This grant will help my team to determine whether a slower speed of oxygen delivery is beneficial when compared to standard flow rates, something that is yet to be comprehensively tested.” Murdoch Children's Research Institute's (MCRI) Dr Kristin Ferguson has received a ZOLL Medical Corporation Foundation grant to improve the delivery of oxygen to preterm babies who require life-saving lung support. About 3,000 babies in Australia are born very preterm every year and many require invasive treatments that can contribute to chronic lung disease and ongoing impairments to breathing, motor skills and brain development. About us
Murdoch Children's Research Institute (MCRI) is Australia's largest child health research institute and is ranked among the top three globally for research quality and impact. Our team of 1,800+ researchers works across over 150 common and rare diseases and conditions affecting children and adolescents. From allergies and asthma, diabetes and mental health issues to cancer and rare genetic disorders, we are relentless in our pursuit to transform child health through research and give all children the opportunity to live a healthy and fulfilled life. Our story began in 1986, when world-leading philanthropist Dame Elisabeth Murdoch and genetics pioneer Professor David Danks imagined a better future for our children and established the original Murdoch Institute for Research in Birth Defects. Since then, MCRI has grown from a genetics research institute to a global leader in child health. Our work also goes beyond research. MCRI is one of the only research institutes in Australia to offer genetic testing via our subsidiary, the Victorian Clinic of Genetic Services (VCGS), to find answers for families of children with previously undiagnosed conditions. Operating in a unique model with The Royal Children's Hospital and the University of Melbourne, MCRI is part of a great circle of healthcare and discovery – helping transform child health from the laboratories to clinics and out into communities.

Yesterday, we marked 20 years of the Victorian Infant Hearing Screening Program (VIHSP). Since its establishment, VIHSP has been dedicated to early detection of hearing loss, ensuring timely support and intervention for newborns and their families. We celebrated this milestone by honouring all those who have contributed to VIHSP’s success and the achievement of over 1.3 million screenings. The celebration was a testament to the dedication of our staff, both at Murdoch Children’s Research Institute (MCRI) and The Royal Children's Hospital (RCH), and in regional and remote areas, who have worked tirelessly to make this program a success. A special thank you to all team members who have made this program a success, bringing life-changing screenings to families across the whole of Victoria! The program is delivered by the Centre for Community Child Health, a research group of Murdoch Children's Research Institute (MCRI) and a department of The Royal Children's Hospital.

The world faces a medical oxygen access crisis, with only a third of the 370 million people in need of oxygen receiving it. Murdoch Children's Research Institute's (MCRI) Dr Hamish Graham has spoken to The New York Times about new research that highlights the urgent need to address this equity issue before another potential pandemic, particularly in low and middle-income countries. Targets for universal access, national roadmaps and more affordable care are vital to help fill the medical oxygen gap affecting more than half of the world’s population, according to a new global report. The Lancet Global Health Commission report details for the first time how future investment in strengthening medical oxygen systems could have a huge impact by saving millions of lives and improving pandemic preparedness. Almost 400 million children and adults require medical oxygen every year. More than five billion people, 60 per cent of the world’s population, don’t have access to safe and affordable medical oxygen services. The Commission, co-chaired by Makerere University in Uganda, icddr,b in Bangladesh, Murdoch Children's Research Institute (MCRI), Karolinska Institutet in Sweden and the Every Breath Counts Coalition in the US was launched in 2022 against the backdrop of the COVID-19 pandemic. MCRI Dr Hamish Graham, lead report author, said channelling investments into national oxygen plans and bolstering health systems, including wider use of pulse oximeters (a small device that measures how much oxygen is in the blood), would help solve the medical oxygen crisis. This is such big news perhaps not appreciated by all. It’s not about 3 days of ECEC for everyone but more importantly it IS about 3 days for families who were previously excluded due to the activity test. That meant kids were missing out on great ECEC and parents were missing out on employment opportunities. Lose-lose. Now it’s win-win! Great advocacy from ECEC giants like Myra Geddes Sam Page Caroline Croser-Barlow Elizabeth Death (pronounced Deeth) amazing people presenting irrefutable amazing evidence BUT for truly equitable outcomes we need high quality ECEC that is designed to meet the needs of local families or we will increase our already substantial inequalities evident by the time kids get to school. That’s why #RestackingtheOdds is so important. It puts data into the hands of front line educators so they KNOW how they are doing and can course correct- quickly. Olivia Hilton Jacqui McCann Social Ventures Australia It’s exciting times for ECD 😊. AND we can evaluate the impact of this amazing policy through Generation Victoria - our whole of state cohort - the once in a lifetime opportunity to test at scale. Better outcomes for Australian children and another step towards universal early childhood education and care. As a Centre focused on reducing inequities in children’s outcomes, we are very pleased to see all Australian children will now receive 3 days of guaranteed, subsidised childcare from January 2026. https://bit.ly/41gY6AM The 3-day guarantee will mean more children and their families can now access the important early education and care opportunities they need to thrive. We also know that for children to receive the most benefit from ECEC, services need to be high-quality, accessible to families when and where they need them, and evidence informed.
