  • We’re so proud of our incredible team, particularly our wonderful Education and Programs Coordinator Matthew Duncan, for developing yet another stellar school holiday program! Our 𝗕𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗮 𝗣𝗼𝗱𝗰𝗮𝘀𝘁 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝗿 workshop for teens is back—this time, in our brand-new podcasting studio. Last time, participants dreamed up a hilarious podcast, 𝑪𝒉𝒂𝒐𝒔 𝒊𝒏 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝑮𝒂𝒍𝒂𝒙𝒚 𝒘𝒊𝒕𝒉 𝑷𝒆𝒓𝒔𝒆𝒖𝒔 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝑻𝒉𝒆𝒐, featuring fictional ads, surprise guests (played by Matt) and a storyline about Disney controlling the Star Wars universe. 🎙️ Here's the link to a full episode on YouTube: https://lnkd.in/gU-QKU9r Learn more about our school holiday programs: https://lnkd.in/gtfGi4vW #PodcastingWorkshop #NCMKids #STEAMLearning #PodcastLife

  • Today, on Human Rights Day, we're sharing an excerpt from our compelling interview with Geoffrey Robertson AO KC, featured in our exhibition, 'Instruments of Surveillance,' curated by Jemimah Widdicombe. Robertson shares his personal experiences of being surveilled by intelligence agencies across the globe—from MI5 in Britain to the Stalinists in Czechoslovakia—and raises critical questions about oversight in an era of increasing surveillance: "Who guards the guardians? It’s a question we have still not satisfactorily answered." This thought-provoking article is just a glimpse into the stories explored in 'Instruments of Surveillance'. and on display until March 2025. ➡️ Read the full article: https://bit.ly/3ZKI6Gz ➡️ Learn more about 'Instruments of Surveillance': https://bit.ly/4g2QarW Let’s continue the conversation about privacy, surveillance, and the ethical responsibilities of those in power. #HumanRightsDay #Surveillance #InstrumentsOfSurveillance #NationalCommunicationMuseum #GeoffreyRobertson #HumanRights

  • We hope your weekend is as fabulous as this creation, made by one of our visitors using an interactive in our Conversations Gallery. The prompt for this image was a “vintage, futuristic, silly, novelty cat made of flowers to help humans evolve.” This interactive, designed by Melanie Huang, introduces visitors to AI Image Generation in an accessible and easy-to-use way. The AI image generation is powered by Leonardo.Ai . • The 'Enigma' machine 🌀 🔊 Trigger Warning: This post discusses themes of war, persecution, and suicide. This German machine had over 150 million million million coded combinations. That's not a typo. The Nazis believed it was unbreakable. British officer Alan Turing helped crack it. Turing's pioneering work in early computing contributed to the foundations for Artificial Intelligence (AI). Alan Turing took his own life over a decade after helping end the Second World War, estranged from the intelligence community after being criminalised for his homosexuality. Turing faced many enigmas during his lifetime. See this Enigma machine, now on display at NCM As part of 'Instruments of Surveillance' curated by Jemimah Widdicombe Included with museum entry Learn more and book: https://lnkd.in/gTpcUNi9 📸 Cipher Machine, 'Enigma' Chiffriermaschinen AG, Germany 1943. • Exploring the “Shadowy World” of Surveillance Our latest exhibition, 'Instruments of Surveillance', delves into the complex landscape of surveillance technology. With the recent release of 'Surveilled' on HBO, investigative journalist Ronan Farrow has shone a light on the powerful spyware used by governments and private entities alike. Farrow notes, “We all need to be invested in whether the space for political diversity of opinion, resistance, dissent, journalists getting information, shrinks or remains alive.” 'Surveilled' isn’t available in Australia, however our exhibition offers a chance to explore these pressing themes closer to home. From the clandestine techniques used in Operation Ironside to more everyday forms of surveillance, 'Instruments of Surveillance' invites audiences to unpack the technologies used to monitor and to consider our role in this evolving landscape. “The simple act of watching over and being watched grows increasingly complex and problematic when intertwined with advanced and widely accessible technological instruments and systems,” says Jemimah Widdicombe, 'Instruments of Surveillance' curator. “To quote KC Geoffrey Robertson, a contributor to the 'Instruments of Surveillance' exhibition and publication: ‘Who guards the guardians?’ Technologically enabled surveillance has become an unavoidable aspect of daily life, underscoring the need for stronger regulatory frameworks, rigorous oversight, and broader public education.” Check out Ronan Farrow’s recent interview with The Guardian’s Adrian Horton here: https://lnkd.in/d5zt95nQ Or visit 'Instruments of Surveillance' to explore this topic and see an incredible array of surveillance technologies first-hand: https://lnkd.in/gTpcUNi9 #InstrumentsofSurveillance #surveillancetechnology #surveilled
