Skeptical about student-led venture capital? The concept may seem unfamiliar in Australia, but they're flourishing and successful in the world's best ecosystems. Here are some of our international friends: Dorm Room Fund (U.S.): the OG of student VCs. Born in 2012 from a bold idea - that traditional VC was underestimating student founders. Fast-forward: $9B+ in value created, $2B+ raised by its portfolio companies, and a track record of industry-shaking startups. Protégé Ventures (Singapore): launched in 2017 to back student founders when no one else would. Today, it’s shaping Singapore’s ecosystem, with founders of unicorns like Carousell Group and thetoo. ninjavan who started as students. Front Row Ventures, Canada’s first student-run venture capital fund, has invested in student-led startups across 20+ universities, enabling a new generation of entrepreneurs. By connecting student talent to venture opportunities, it’s portfolio companies have collectively raised over $50 million in follow-on funding. These funds didn’t launch in hyper-mature ecosystems. Recently, we gathered an incredible group of ambitious student founders and AI experts at the 'AI in Startups: Panel & Mixer' for an unforgettable evening of learning and connection. Hosted between Build Club Monash DeepNeuron and NextGen Ventures – the event set out to inspire the next generation of young AI founders! What did we learn? 🏆 Momentum is key: Success starts with a mindset shift. Building strong habits and maintaining momentum early on is crucial for achieving your goals. 🏆 Students have less to lose and a lot to gain: Starting a business as a student is a low-risk, high-reward opportunity. With fewer commitments and lower opportunity costs, now is the perfect time to dive in. 🏆 Naivety is an asset: Not knowing how hard something will be often leads to bold action. Embrace it! It can drive innovation and fearless problem-solving. 🏆 Founding is addictive: The freedom, challenge, and impact of being a founder make it hard to return to traditional roles. Entrepreneurship is a league of its own. Some of the most prominent players - Blackbird, Startmate, Skalata, and Folklore Ventures - aren’t just testing the waters; they’re all-in. But here’s where it gets interesting: Folklore Ventures, Skalata, CommonSense Ventures, IP Group plc, Galileo Ventures, and Aura Ventures have historically invested 10% of their portfolio to student-founded startups (according to our data/report).
