Disrupting Noise Pollution at the Source

About us

Noizend is dedicated to addressing the pressing issue of excessive noise pollution, particularly low frequency noise, that affects communities worldwide. Noizend will be using applied science to tailor solutions for specific problems based upon the proven science of active noise control and researching and developing products to be licensed to businesses. The United Nations in its 2022 Frontiers Report “Noise, Blazes and Mismatches” highlighted the 3 major environmental issues facing the world a 'triple planetary crisis". The first issue is Noise Pollution especially in cities. This is a global problem. Solving this problem will provide a global business opportunity and also help make the world a little bit quieter for everyone's benefit near the active products.

  • The Senate recently published its report on the impact and mitigation of aircraft noise on residents and businesses in capital cities and regional towns which received over 680 public submissions. There were hundreds and hundreds of complaint submissions about aircraft noise. Here is an extract from Submission 688. “I am writing this submission on behalf of myself and many thousands of residents in the Blue Mountains and Sydney whose lives will be drastically affected by the development of the Western Sydney International Airport and the proposed new flight parts over our communities. I have met and talked to many hundreds of representatives from local groups and areas and know that the opinions expressed below are shared by the vast majority of residents both here and in the Western Suburbs whose homes will be impacted by low flying passenger and freight planes. I have included some specific names here, but they are to be treated as confidential. My own name may be published – Pam Staples. Can we ask right from the start why there are no regulations in place to prevent aircraft noise from disturbing the communities these aircraft fly over? There are regulations for noise emissions from machinery in most industries – it is not allowable for tradespeople or others to make noise and disturb people within certain hours, why is this then not the case with aircraft noise? Tools and lawnmowers are noise regulated but the equivalent sounds, and much louder, are permitted from the Aviation industry to disturb life inside people’s homes ALL NIGHT. The impact of this is UNCONSCIONABLE and totally inequitable. People in areas with no curfew are encouraged to ask for flights to go over other areas thus setting communities against each other and spreading the toxic issue of noise impacts even further.” This is part of her detailed 8 page submission. Aircraft noise will always be around, this is why the development of our Noizend Shields is so vital.

No curfew or caps on flight numbers for Brisbane airport The Federal Parliament has recently voted down the Greens’ legislation regarding a curfew and cap on the number of flights for Brisbane airport based upon the Facebook page of Federal Greens’ member Max Chandler-Mather. He said “A disappointing (though not surprising) outcome in the Parliament tonight as Labor votes AGAINST a cap and curfew and the LNP skip the vote entirely. The motion called on the government simply to "consider" whether a movement cap and curfew like Sydney's should be applied to other airports including Brisbane Airport. But even that was a bridge too far, apparently.” This leaves residents under flight paths with limited options especially as Brisbane airport operates 24/7. Supporting Noizend’s development of Noizend Shields to reduce low-frequency noise entering homes is more vital than ever. • Noise conditions for approval of Melbourne’s third runway. The recent approval of the construction of Melbourne’s third runway came with several conditions most of which related to noise. One major focus was on noise sharing which does not solve the problem. This is why our Noizend Shields being developed to reduce low-frequency noise entering homes is so important. Here are the conditions imposed by the Hon. Catherine King MP:- “Throughout my consideration of this proposal, the needs of the local community have been front of mind. That is why I have imposed certain conditions on Melbourne Airport in order for the third runway to proceed. These represent the most comprehensive set of conditions for a project of this type, including: Melbourne Airport providing a legally-enforceable commitment to restore the length of the east-west runway to maximise the opportunities for noise sharing; Design and implementation of a noise sharing and airspace plan that prioritises sharing of aircraft noise between affected areas; Implementation of a noise amelioration program to communities most impacted; And conducting a community health study into the impacts of noise before and after the establishment of the third runway – recording baseline data in the lead up to and for the first 20 years of the operation of the third runway. My decision to require that the airport maintain sufficient capacity on the existing east-west runway is to support effective noise sharing at Melbourne Airport, so that no one community bears the brunt of the airport’s growth. The noise sharing plan will be developed by the airport, and in consultation with local communities, over the years to come.”

NSW Government Cracks Down on Car Noise The NSW Environment Protection Authority (EPA) is trialling noise cameras in 2 locations in Sydney and Wollongong to crack down on noisy cars. According to an Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) article the cameras are targetting car noise over 90 decibels within 15 metres of the camera and then scan the licence plates. The main focus is on regulatory compliance. The EPA stated “We have committed to trialling noise cameras in the Bayside Council (NSW) and Wollongong City Council local government areas in response to community concerns about anti-social behaviour and noisy vehicles. … An interagency working group led by the EPA and including NSW Police Force, Transport for NSW and councils. Data will be collected from the noise camera technology along with information from concerned community members and councils.” This approach will through fines reduce the noise of a small number of cars. However, the real problem of noise from traffic noise needs to be addressed. This is where Noizend’s Shields that we are developing can reduce all traffic noise entering people’s homes – not just noise from “hoon” cars that these noise camera are aimed at.
