Noosa Biosphere Reserve - A celebration of community and environment.
About us
The Noosa Biosphere Reserve is a celebration of community and environment. Since 2007, the Noosa Shire has held UNESCO Biosphere Reserve status. It recognises the ongoing efforts of the Noosa community to manage the region’s land, waters and wildlife sustainably, in balance with its urban population and visitors from around the world. Together, with more than 700 biosphere reserves around the world, we are working towards the global goals of the Man and Biosphere Program and Lima Action Plan. Learn how we progress these goals in the Noosa Biosphere Reserve, by supporting projects and research that enhance biodiversity and promote sustainable living in Noosa. It's GivingTuesday! 🙏 Noosa gives us so much—a vibrant community, stunning landscapes, an abundance of wildlife at every turn, and an incredible natural and cultural heritage. Now it's our turn to give back to the place we love.💚 With a small donation to the Noosa Biosphere Reserve Foundation, you’re helping to safeguard Noosa’s unique ecosystems, ensuring they thrive now and for future generations. $25 can help protect our Noosa River and marine ecosystems, ensuring safe, healthy waterways where humans, marine life, and aquatic plants can flourish together. $50 empowers us with cutting-edge bioacoustic technology to support the survival of the threatened Glossy Black-Cockatoos, helping them thrive through improved breeding and feeding habits. $75 keeps our Koala Collaborators project thriving, enhancing the health and survival rates of our cherished koalas, ensuring future generations can enjoy these iconic creatures in the Noosa Shire. Your generosity helps keep Noosa beautiful, biodiverse, and resilient. Protect what you love and make a lasting impact for generations to come. 🌎💧🐾 💚 Donate today and #LiveLikeYouLoveIt. https://lnkd.in/gM4bVq3u #GivingTuesday #GivingDay #NoosaBiosphere #Supporter

The conservation research in the Noosa Biosphere Reserve impacts everyone who lives, works and visits the Noosa Shire. 🌊 Marine research influences how your family swims, plays, and thrives on our pristine beaches and river systems, ensuring they remain safe and healthy for generations. 🥕 Agricultural projects shape the quality of food on your plate, with ripple effects on human health and sustainable farming practices. 🌿 Land conservation programs safeguard biodiversity, protect threatened ecosystems, and preserve the nature-based lifestyle that makes Noosa unique. Thanks to the incredible generosity of Noosa Shire residents and supporters, we can continue to uphold our UNESCO Biosphere Reserve status and preserve the very essence of what makes Noosa so special. Tuesday 3 December is national GivingTuesday. A time to make a positive impact in your community. This month, we’re asking you to help us protect what you love. Get ready to give, on GivingTuesday. #NoosaBiosphere #LiveLikeYouLoveIt

NBRF was pleased to recently host a tour of the Noosa River to explore the groundbreaking Oyster Reef Ecosystem Restoration Project. 🦪 Program Manager, Garry Hamilton and Richard Howard (former Noosa Integrated Catchment Assoc Inc (NICA)) took a group of passionate University of the Sunshine Coast students organised with Fien Van den Steen from the Green Ambassadors Upskilling Sustainability initiative. The excursion sparked thought-provoking discussions among students from diverse fields such as economics, environmental management, and community studies. These insights will shape exciting opportunities for future research into our river’s oyster ecosystems. This project is lead by The Nature Conservancy in Australia. Learn more at https://lnkd.in/g36wh3hN 💡 Did you know? Large QR codes on buoys along the river provide detailed information about the project. Be sure to scan them next time you’re out on the water! 📸 Photos by Fien Van den Steen #generationrestoration #oysterreef #noosabiosphere #noosa

The Glossy Black-Cockatoo is a threatened species with critical habitat found within the Noosa Biosphere Reserve. Bushland Conservation Management are employing bioacoustic sound recorders and machine learning to monitor habitat and identify nesting and feed sites to inform conservation management strategies. 🦜🌳 This is what happens inside Noosa's living lab. Here, breakthrough ideas and technology meet conservation, supporting research in a real-world setting for real outcomes. 🌍🌱 In the Noosa Biosphere Reserve, we're working to enhance biodiversity and stop the decline of species under threat. 🚫 Discover more: https://lnkd.in/gSUAvCH4 #NoosaLivingLab #NoosaBiosphere

This week we co-hosted a group of University of the Sunshine Coast students with Noosa Integrated Catchment Assoc Inc (NICA) on an excursion on the Noosa River to learn about the Oyster Ecosystem Restoration Project. Thank you to Fien and the Upskilling Sustainability UniSC group for visiting and inspiring sustainability in more students. #NoosaBiosphere The Nature Conservancy in Australia
As 'learning spaces for sustainable development', we are blessed to live at the intersection of 3 UNESCO #biospheres! That's why Upskilling Sustainability invited a group of University of the Sunshine Coast students to explore the #oyster #reefs in the Noosa Council area. Did you know 1 oyster purifies 4 litres of water an hour?! They strengthen the river banks and provide nesting, feeding and living areas for multiple species - talking about #naturebased solutions! Thank you Garry Hamilton of the Noosa Biosphere Reserve Foundation and Richard Howard of Noosa Integrated Catchment Assoc Inc (NICA) for sharing your wisdom and drive; We're keen to further explore our biospheres!

Embracing Smart Technology for Conservation in the Noosa Biosphere 🌿 The Noosa Biosphere Reserve is leading innovation and technology to tackle environmental challenges. As a UNESCO biosphere reserve, our mission is to balance thriving communities with sustainable development and innovative conservation efforts. In Noosa's living laboratory, we’re testing real-world solutions powered by advanced technology to enhance biodiversity and ensure a sustainable future for all. Here’s a closer look at some of the exciting projects in our region making an impact: 🐨 AI-powered drones for Koala detection Partnering with QUT, Noosa & District Landcare is using thermal drones and AI to track local koala populations. The data feeds into a National AI Network, improving accuracy and informing conservation strategies for this iconic species. 🦜 Glossy Black-Cockatoo sound monitoring Bioacoustic recorders are used to track the Glossy Black-Cockatoo’s movements. This technology helps identify feeding and nesting areas, using AI to monitor vast regions without disturbing the birds, contributing to crucial conservation efforts. Bushland Conservation Management 🌾 Keeping Soil in Kin Kin LiDAR technology identifies erosion hotspots and tracks changes in soil elevation. This allows Noosa & District Landcare to remediate erosion hotspots, improving Noosa River's water quality and agricultural productivity across the region. 🦈 Bull Shark tagging We're proud partners in research led by University of the Sunshine Coast tagging bull sharks to monitor their movements and understand their ecology. The data helps inform shark bite mitigation strategies while also improving education for water users about safe practices in our waterways. 🔥 Firetech Connect for Bushfire Resilience Emerging from the 2019 Peregian bushfires, this project powered by Noosa Council's Peregian Digital Hub uses tech like drones and data-driven solutions to build bushfire resilience. It positions Noosa as a leader in bushfire technology innovation. Explore more about these projects in our recent Noosa Today article: https://lnkd.in/g5ZczcFP #NoosaBiosphere #SmartTech
