The Sydney/Newcastle Regional Forum was held recently at Yarpa NSW Indigenous Business & Employment Hub, providing an opportunity for NSWALC to hear feedback from LALCs and discuss priorities. Some of the conversations, over the two days, were around Treaty, where Senior Strategy Officer, Harriette Poiner, discussed NSW CAPO (Coalition of Aboriginal Peak Organisations) Treaty engagement strategy. And Gandangara Local Aboriginal Land Council had an opportunity to show plans for their state-of-the-art refurbishment. Chairperson, Tony Scholes, shares their vision for the future to support members and community. The Aboriginal flag is a powerful symbol of pride, recognition and resilience for Aboriginal people. NSWALC Chairperson Cr Raymond Kelly said it was disappointing opposition Leader Peter Dutton’s comments on ditching the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander flags came on the same day as Paul Keating’s famous Redfern Speech in 1992. “Our flag highlights the importance of Aboriginal heritage and culture and is widely embraced as a representation of identity and the ongoing struggle for recognition and rights within Australia,’’ NSWALC Chairperson Councillor Raymond Kelly said. The flag is not intended to challenge or undermine other communities or groups, but to reflect the significance of Aboriginal peoples' experiences, he said.

Our Rights, Our Future, Right Now Human Rights Day, observed on December 10, marks the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 1948. This year’s theme highlights the importance of reinforcing First Nations rights through both the Universal Declaration and the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples. At NSWALC, we are committed to advocating for First Nations communities, focusing on rights to Country, housing, and freedom from discrimination. We continue to push for real change—collaboration, self-determination, and transformative action are essential to improving outcomes for our people.
