About us
The Agency for Clinical Innovation (ACI) works with clinicians, consumers and system leaders to improve the health system in NSW. We design and implement new ways to deliver care for patients. The ACI partners with the Ministry of Health, pillar organisations, local health districts, specialty networks, clinicians, patients and carers. We work together to achieve better value in healthcare by: • improving patient and provider experience • improving patient outcomes • delivering efficient and sustainable healthcare services. The ACI is part of NSW Health's Clinical Innovation and Research Division and works closely with the Office for Health and Medical Research.

To celebrate the festive season, the ACI has come together to support others in need. 🎁 Staff have donated new toys, socks, personal hygiene products and food for the Wayside Chapel and The Salvation Army Australia Christmas Appeal. The donations are being collected around a barbecue installation in our office (pictured). Many different cultures gather round the barbecue at this time of year, so it's a fitting way to celebrate and support our community. A huge thank you to Zoe Puechberty, our Palliative Care and End of Life Project Officer, and our IDEA team for driving this fun and rewarding initiative. Dr Trevor Chan has enjoyed a remarkable career and was recently recognised by South Eastern Sydney Local Health District (SESLHD) for 30 years of dedication to NSW Health. 👏 As an expert emergency department doctor and specialist, Trevor has also been the Clinical Director of our Emergency Care Institute since November 2020. "It’s amazing how quickly 30 years goes by. It's helped by doing work that is enjoyable, challenging and constantly teaches you something new," reflects Trevor. "During my time in NSW Health, this has been through the people I’ve met, whether they be patients or carers, doctors, nurses, allied health staff, administrative support, project officers, researchers, managers or executives. "It’s the people that will always be the heart and soul of any organisation.” Trevor's commitment to public health and driving clinical innovation is reflected in the projects he's championed, such as the emergency care assessment and treatment (ECAT) program, which are transforming how emergency care is delivered in NSW. A thought-provoking panel discussion has explored the reality of living with, and treating, chronic pain after a brain injury or spinal cord injury. 💡 At the John Walsh Centre for Rehabilitation Research Annual Forum, panelist Dr Regina Schultz, Senior Clinical Psychologist at Royal North Shore Hospital, explained how common chronic pain is after a severe injury. But early intervention, such as the evidence-based Be Pain Smart treatment program, can be a game changer. Naomi Deck shared her personal experience of traumatic brain injury and living with chronic pain for two decades. She says the Be Pain Smart clinic is reducing the impact of pain in her life, and improving her day-to-day health and wellbeing. This unique program was developed by the ACI and funded by icare NSW. Injury and illness can affect a person’s sexual wellbeing and intimate relationships. Conversations can be routinely included into everyday healthcare practices. This new training module on My Health Learning is designed for all NSW Health clinicians. You'll learn why these conversations are important and how to have open, respectful and informative discussions with your patients. Thank you to clinicians from our Rehabilitation and Brain Injury Networks who helped develop the course and feature in some of the videos.
