It was wonderful reconnecting with familiar faces and meeting many new ones, all united by a shared passion for advancing the people side of local government.   • 🔍 Exploring the connection between coaching and mental well-being 🔍 At Objective Leader’s recent Coach Connect session, our coaches dove into the International Coaching Federation’s latest survey on “Coaching and Mental Well-being.” The conversation was both rich and thought-provoking, sparking some key insights: 💡 Burnout, stress, and overwhelm are ever-present in workplaces. Mental well-being often lies just beneath the surface of most coaching conversations, emerging as the dialogue deepens. 💡 We're seeing a shift from focusing solely on “leader" development to a more holistic “leadership development” (credit to Professor Peter Hawkins). This means coaching is evolving from just honing skills to addressing the whole person within the complexity of their work and life systems. 💡 Coaching now goes beyond goal-setting — it's about finding meaning, fostering connection, and navigating broader environments and communities. 💡 Culturally, it’s becoming easier to openly discuss mental well-being, which is encouraging for individuals and organisations alike.   • Today is World Mental Health Day! 🧠 💪 This year, the World Health Organization's theme is "Mental Health at Work". With so much of our time spent at work (a third of our lives), it is vital for organisations to create safe places for people to work, whether from the office or remotely.     Since February, I've been coaching the Senior Leadership Team at Liverpool Plains Shire Council, guiding them in shaping strategy and culture. The experience has been highly rewarding, with great feedback on the value they've gained, such as: - The activities allowed us to see things from different perspectives. - We identified the diversity of people within the team - Sessions were Interactive with some great conversations with different people. - We worked through some theory, then thought about how we would apply it to a work situation/scenario. This is good for practising problem solving with work colleagues which leads to a better understanding of how and why others approach challenges the way they do. - A way to learn to work with others, whilst maintaining your own values. - There was a good balance of theory and practical elements. It has been a pleasure coaching the team, and I’m eager to see how they drive the organisation toward future success. Liverpool Plains Shire Council Gary Murphy

  • The insights from this year's Human Synergistics Culture & Leadership Conference were invaluable and offered key takeaways that every organisation should keep in mind: - Your greatest leverage is your people. - Strategic initiatives won’t thrive without the right culture and leadership to support them. - Culture is leader-led and is not a straight path, it’s a journey where learning is essential. - Most importantly, people can't deliver results if they don't fully understand the vision.
