What makes an Enterprise MRO Spare Parts Catalogue high quality? A quality MRO catalogue does not impede or cause mistakes in MRO processes that use material masters, and it means funds for spare parts and operating supplies are used efficiently. A quality thing is something that does what it is supposed to do. If you want to measure quality of something, you measure against the requirements for that thing. To know the degree of quality, you first need to know what the things are supposed to do or not do. For Maintenance Repair & Operations (MRO) material masters in a business system, quality includes having these attributes: ✳️       Having a single system record to represent each real-world item needed to support current assets ✳️       Not having records with indeterminate identities These attributes support business objectives: ✳️       Items are findable by search without dealing with many unresolved possible correct items ✳️       Items supplied to jobs (bought or issued from stores) are the correct items ✳️       The warehouse does not contain real-world items represented with multiple material masters These quality attributes are achieved by: ✳️       Having consistently structured descriptions, key specifications, manufacturer and manufacturer part numbers (MPN) so all item identity attributes are comparable with other records of the same material class. This enables a real rationalization of the existing catalogue items well beyond what standard MPN comparisons do ✳️       Consistently structured identities are created by applying an identity taxonomy having mutually exclusive classes (based on item nouns) with each class having appropriate identifying attributes for the class ✳️       Indeterminate item records need to be deleted or if there is stock on the shelf additional clues to get a proper identity need to be captured by inspection ✳️       All future material master additions use the identity taxonomy to populate and compare all attributes, so the MRO catalogue retains its quality status Quality is measurable by counting the percentage of MRO catalogue items that conform to their assigned identity class template.
