DBI (Decarbonising the Building Industry)

It was an absolute honor to coordinate the first-ever Decarbonising the Building Industry 2024 Conference (#DBI2024) last month. The two-day event brought together over 200 brilliant minds from 18 countries to explore innovative strategies for achieving net-zero, whole-life carbon buildings by 2050. The conference highlights included inspiring keynotes, a plenary roundtable, five thought-provoking panel discussions, 15 groundbreaking technical sessions, collaborations with the IEA EBC Building Energy Summit, engaging poster and industry booths, and a culturally dynamic gala dinner. Topics ranged from low-carbon materials, modular construction, and sustainable building practices to AI-driven technologies for reducing operational emissions—and much more. Hosted by the DBI (Decarbonising the Building Industry), #DBI2024 provided a platform for transformative ideas and meaningful collaborations to tackle the critical challenges of decarbonizing the building industry. For many of us in the DBI Network, this was our first time hosting an international conference—myself included! I drew on my coordinating and management skills from my field days to see this conference through, from design and planning to execution and close-out. An architect moderating a session in building services? why not? Had a great time moderating this session for the DBI (Decarbonising the Building Industry) event last week. Findings showcased research from electricity-hungry Indonesia, endless possibilities of a network of Raspberry Pi-led sensing devices, the value of delivering thermally comfort indoors and living labs of all sizes and shapes. Last week, I had the incredible opportunity to present our work at DBI (Decarbonising the Building Industry) held at the University of Melbourne, and discuss with people from different stakeholders how to reduce carbon emissions from infrastructure. It was inspiring to hear about the work people are doing worldwide to tackle the climate crisis and meet some pioneers in this topic. Last week, I had the privilege of attending the DBI (Decarbonising the Building Industry) Conference at the University of Melbourne. The event provided a fantastic opportunity to present my research on Actions for Lowering Embodied Carbon Emissions in the Building and Construction Sector. I am thankful to my supervisors, Rodney Stewart, Tingting Liu and Sherif M., for their guidance and support throughout this project. It has been a truly rewarding experience working with you all. It was a pleasure to meet and connect with professionals and engage in meaningful discussions at the conference. A special thanks to the DBI team for organising such an impactful event. Their dedication to advancing the decarbonisation agenda in the building industry is truly commendable.

Over 10 days across three Australian cities (Perth, Canberra, and Melbourne), delegations from three Vietnamese ministries (Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, Ministry of Industry and Trade Vietnam, Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development) were warmly welcomed and immersed in a culture of knowledge exchange and collaboration. They engaged with government agencies and industry partners, both domestically and internationally, gaining valuable insights and expertise. With cherished memories and enriched knowledge, they returned home equipped to support Vietnam in establishing its national GHG inventory account, developing its carbon market, and formulating business decarbonisation strategies. This consortium of Curtin University and Carbon Market Institute (CMI) has been made possible through generous funding provided by the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, administered by Aus4Skills, as part of the comprehensive strategic partnership between Australia and Vietnam in the field of climate change. DBI 2024 🌏🌱 I had the incredible opportunity to attend and present my research at the DBI (Decarbonising the Building Industry) 2024 at the University of Melbourne! 🏛️ It was an honor to share my findings on #sustainablebuilding practices with a diverse group of industry leaders, academics, policymakers, government officials, and researchers from around the world. The conference provided a rich platform for exchanging ideas and collaborating on innovative solutions to decarbonise the building sector and drive real change in the fight against climate change. Melbourne University, also known as the University of Melbourne, is a prestigious and leading institution in Australia, renowned for its strong focus on research and high academic standards. It’s a dream come true to attend and present at the prestigious University of Melbourne, an unforgettable milestone in my journey. I am truly grateful to Tuan Ngo and Behzad Rismanchi for organizing the #DBI2024 at the University of Melbourne. It’s an honor to be part of this important event, where I can share my research and connect with experts from across the globe.
