Rural communities in America are facing a growing and preventable health crisis as HPV-associated cancers are increasing at an alarming rate compared to urban areas. Recent research by Jason Semprini, Ph.D., MPP, assistant professor in the Department of Public Health at Des Moines University Medicine and Health Sciences, published in the Journal of Rural and Remote Health, reveals a widening disparity in HPV-related cancer incidence and mortality between rural and urban communities.

New Original Research article in RRH: Wolastoqiyik adaptation of the Aaniish Naa Gegii: the Children’s Health and Well-Being Measure by Isabelle Bernard, Joline Guitard, Annie Roy-Charland, Diane Pelletier and Nancy Young. https://lnkd.in/dBminfEi Indigenous organizations and community health directors consistently highlight the lack of comprehensive data and the urgent requirement for measures to bridge the gap in health assessment and health disparities among Indigenous youth. The Aaniish Naa Gegii: Child Health and Well-being Measure (ACHWM) was co-created with and for Indigenous children from the Wiikwemkoong Unceded Territory in northern Ontario. The measure aims to provide a holistic perspective on wellbeing that goes beyond health and considers the values and beliefs of Indigenous peoples. While many First Nations communities in Canada share similar general concepts of holistic health, there are still important cultural distinctions within each community. New Review Article in RRH: A scoping review of rural mental health and substance use nursing by Sage Thomas, Nelly Oelke, Dennis Jasper, Michelle Pavloff and Elizabeth Keys. https://lnkd.in/g2tD7YJ2 In Canada, an estimated 20% of the population experiences a mental health and/or substance use (MHSU) disorder, such as generalized anxiety disorder or major depressive disorder, in any one year. People living in rural regions tend to have disproportionately higher rates of mental health challenges, poorer mental health outcomes and a higher risk of a fatal toxic drug poisoning compared with urban areas. Compounding these inequities, MHSU services may be absent, difficult to access, or inadequate in rural areas. Although literature reviews have been conducted on rural nursing (ie. on rural health nursing research, rural continuing nursing education, and evidence-based practice and rural nursing), less attention has been paid to rural MHSU nursing. New publication from members of the Global Indigneous Data Alliance (GIDA). We argue that renewed attention is needed to the original intent of CARE: to direct data actors to local communities’ protocols and frameworks for IDGov, and to transform institutional policies and practices to fortify Indigenous Peoples’ authority to control their data. In this article, GIDA members from Aotearoa New Zealand, Australia, Canada, and the United States share examples of IDGov models that predate and emerged after the development of CARE. https://lnkd.in/gYEDvKAd

Felicity Goodyear-Smith is a New Zealand general practitioner and professor of primary health care at the University of Auckland. She has had a rich and wide-ranging career in clinical and forensic medical practice, research, teaching, leadership roles as chair of the international committee of NAPCRG and of the WONCA Working Party on Research, and founding editor of the Journal of Primary Health Care. She is a keen writer of academic papers and books. Felicity is currently on the steering committee with Drs Anna Stavdal and Johann Sigurdsson on the WONCA global core values project.
