This is the last routine earthquake map we'll post in 2024, which covers activity in the last two weeks. There were 8 events above magnitude 2.0, the largest a magnitude 2.8 near Buxton VIC. Wishing you all a seismically uneventful holiday period, but we'll be here to report any noteworthy activity.

Two earthquakes occurred off the west coast of Tasmania last week, and at magnitude 2.6 and 2.2 they were the largest of the 32 events detected in our region. Note: we are now only posting these regular maps to Bluesky, LinkedIn, and Instagram, the latter automatically posting to Facebook & Threads.

52 earthquakes were detected last week, many of which were small events throughout the Flinders Ranges in South Australia. There were only two moderate earthquakes, both magnitude 2.0, one in the Strzelecki Desert in SA, and one in NSW just outside the ACT, southeast of Canberra.

The magnitude 4.2 earthquake near Muswellbrook NSW is the fourth M4+ event in this swarm that began 3 months ago. Last week also saw an M3.2 earthquake about 110km north of Broken Hill NSW; and a M3.1 about 20km west of Gisborne VIC, felt as far away as Melbourne's southeast suburbs.

Here's the last 2 weeks of earthquake activity in southeast Australia: just over 100 events detected. The largest was a magnitude 3.5 at Fosterville Gold Mine in central Victoria. Some of the magnitude ~2 quakes also occurred near mines at Muswellbrook, Singleton and Cadia in NSW

43 earthquakes were detected is southeast Australia by the SRC last week, 11 of which were in the Muswellbrook NSW swarm, which also hosted the largest event of the week: a magnitude 2.8. The other notable NSW events were a 2.7 about 50km west of Parkes, and a 2.4 near Singleton.

Three magnitude 3+ earthquakes in one week! The largest was just a few hours ago: a magnitude 3.8 in central South Australia, about 130km northeast of Coober Pedy. An M3.0 also occurred in the east of that state, and activity continues south of Maatsuyker Island TAS with an M3.2.

A magnitude 3.1 foreshock was followed only minutes later by a magnitude 4.2 earthquake off the south coast of Tasmania last week, with at least three small aftershocks. A magnitude 2.7 quake occurred near a mine south of Mt Owen NSW about 25km east of the Muswellbrook mine swarm

A magnitude 3.2 earthquake northwest of Split Rock Dam in northeast New South Wales was the largest earthquake last week in southeast Australia. Small tremors continued in the ongoing swarms near Muswellbrook and Dalton NSW.

A magnitude 3.2 near Dalton NSW was the largest earthquake last week, and was followed by a dozen smaller quakes. A magnitude 3.0 earthquake occurred near Worndoo VIC, and earthquakes continue near Muswellbrook NSW, with magnitudes 3.0, 2.8 and 1.9 the largest in the last week.
