  • What is informed consent between a Healthcare Professional & Patient? Obtaining informed consent is a healthcare practitioners' ethical obligation as well as a legal duty. Patient capacity must be established on every occasion that an examination or procedure is required. Informed consent refers to the provision of adequate information top the patient, which encompasses: ✔️ The treatment process ✔️ It's benefits ✔️ Risks ✔️The alternatives including doing nothing When responding to a presentation of sexual violence, a healthcare practitioner must be especially sensitive to the complexities and consequences of obtaining valid consent. Informed consent with a patient is discussed in the Responding to Sexual Violence in Adults unit of Monash University’s Sexual Violence Response Training Course. • Like any other worker, sex workers are entitled to a work without the risk of violence, harassment or abuse. Sex workers face significant marginalisation, stigma and discrimination. Due to the high rates of sexual violence experienced, sex workers are considered an at-risk cohort, especially when disclosing sexual violence to authorities or healthcare practitioners, they often told that is an inevitable consequence of their occupation. Project Respect found that 75% of surveyed sex workers had experienced domestic and family violence and 51% reported sexual assault as a specific form of violence. It is also important for healthcare workers to understand what sex work refers to and the myths and misconceptions that surround it, in order to treat patients through an informed lens. Organisations like the Scarlet Alliance, Australian Sex Workers Association, support and promote sex workers equality whilst also advocating for an end to stigma and discrimination. Sex workers and sexual violence are discussed in the Responding to Sexual Violence in At-Risk Patients unit of Monash University’s Sexual Violence Response Training course. • To help support course curriculum, the Sexual Violence Response Training Course team have begun to develop educational video content. 🎥 The first in this project was filmed in Darwin and Alice Springs in the beginning of November. The video ‘How the Northern Territory responds to Sexual Violence’ features interviews with Doctors, Counsellors and Legal Service Providers on how they would respond to a case study scenario that includes a disclosure of sexual violence.  This aims to be the first in a series of curriculum content that includes a video from each state and territory on their response to sexual violence. Below is a behind-the-scenes of the filming, with the completed video to be added to the curriculum in the new year.  ⬇️ A big thank-you to our video participants from NT Health SARCs in Darwin and Alice Springs, and the Central Australian Women's Legal Service and our production team at Romp & Rebel Pictures.
