About us
We are a not-for-profit organisation, whose aim is to improve the visibility of lawyers of African heritage in Western Australia, create professional networking opportunities and develop relationships, develop pathways towards the law for our student members, and promote access to justice and cultural diversity within the WA legal community. As a group, we are acutely aware of the under-representation of our members within the legal community and the Society will be the vehicle through which our members can have a voice. Our objects include: 1. Promoting members of the legal profession who have African heritage or identify as African Australia; 2. Promoting members of the legal profession who have an interest in African Australian affairs and/or enterprise; 3. Providing a network for members to promote, mentor, support and learn from each other; 4. Providing a platform to participate in law reform, advocacy and policy formation; and 5. Developing and promoting connections between the African and Australian legal market.

It's a full circle moment for SAALI's last Book Club of 2024 closing out the year with the same author as our first book in January; No Longer at Ease by Chinua Achebe reviewed by Isheanesu Mitchel Potsekayi. The novel explores themes of identity, cultural conflict and the complexities of post-colonial Nigeria. This comes about as the story follows Obi Okonkwo, a young Nigerian man who went away and has been educated in England and returns to Nigeria to work as a civil servant in Lagos. Obi coming from a respected family in his village, his education abroad marked him as a modern, progressive figure. However, his return to Nigeria forces him to confront the tensions between his Western education and the traditional values of his Igbo heritage. Obi faces a series of personal and moral dilemmas, such as his relationship with Clara, a woman from a lower caste and the pressure to fulfill the expectations of his family and society. As the narrative unfolds, Obi struggles to deal with the burden of his newfound status and the conflicting values of his two worlds. He experiences a growing sense of alienation—feeling disconnected both from his traditional family and the Westernized society he has been educated in. The story ultimately explores the complexities of navigating modernity in a post-colonial context, touching on themes of corruption, class, and the impact of colonialism on Nigerian society. The novel is rather a painful exploration of the challenges of reconciling tradition with the change that comes from moving away as well as the personal costs of trying to live up to the expectations of both colonial and indigenous cultures. Obi's journey ultimately leads to his downfall, symbolizing the broader struggles of a generation caught between two worlds. ___ We hope you have enjoyed the Book Club as much as we have enjoyed bringing you these amazing stories of Africa by talented African authors. There's still time for you to join us at SAALI's Christmas Party where you can discuss the books with like minded people and go in the draw to win every book we featured this year! Our Society of African Australian Lawyers Inc. (SAALI) Book Club for this week is The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind by William Kamkwamba and Bryan Mealer reviewed by Georgina Yiannakis. This is an inspiring memoir about William Kamkwamba, a young boy from rural Malawi who defied the odds to build a windmill that transformed his village. The book, co-authored with Bryan Mealer, explores William’s inventive spirit and provides a touching look into the challenges of growing up in a developing country with limited access to education and resources. The story begins in William’s small village, where his family faced famine and poverty. When his schooling stopped due to unpaid fees, William turned to his local library. Through self-study, he learned about electricity and engineering, sparking his idea to build a windmill for his family and community. Using scrap items like an old bicycle and wood, William built a windmill that provided electricity to his home and water for crops. His journey is a testament to how creativity and determination can bring change, even in the toughest situations. Beyond hardship, this memoir celebrates hope, community, and the impact one person can have. William’s story reminds readers that innovation can come from making the best of what you have, and his experience offers a genuine glimpse of life in Malawi. In short, this book is a moving story of resilience, creativity, and the power of knowledge. It’s a must-read for those seeking motivation, especially young readers facing their own challenges. William’s journey is a reminder that no dream is too big, and any obstacle can be overcome with courage. Did you know that the book was made into a movie? Have you read the book or watched the movie?
