It's something we talk about in our workshops to demonstrate WHY leaders need to take a more human centred approach⁠ ⁠ Pre smartphones & social media, the majority of us humans lived a fairly social life and our basic human needs were met across 3 core pillars ⁠ ✅ home (the 1st place)⁠ ✅ work (the 2nd place)⁠ ✅ social settings (the 3rd place)⁠ ⁠ We had our families, work provided an opportunity to earn money to eat & pay bills, and we had places like church, sporting groups, the pub and community social settings to satisfy our basic human need for social connection⁠⁠ ⁠ Social media has simultaneously made us more connected than ever while removing face to face interactions. Want to catch up with friends? You can do that from your bed over Messenger. ⁠Got some big news to share? Group chat!⁠ ⁠ Socially we have retreated and we can see this in community participation, social & sporting groups and the way we consume our goods. ⁠ ⁠ We might still be at cafes and the like, but we are there behind our phones ⁠ ⁠ 🌛 The 3rd place has disappeared.⁠ ⁠ Which brings us to the workplace. Employees are looking to the workplace to satisfy the need for social connection. Younger employees don't want to turn up, do their work, and go home.⁠ ⁠ Not so coincidentally, strong social connections at work is an employee engagement factor.
