  • At just 2 days old, baby Lucy was transferred to the Newborn Intensive Care Unit at The Royal. Within a few days of her admission, she received the devastating diagnosis of Spinal Muscular Atrophy type 0, a rare and severe genetic condition that causes worsening muscle weakness. Thank you to Lucy's mum, Karlie, for sharing Lucy's story in her own words. It is her hope that by sharing Lucy's story, it will help other parents going through similar challenges on their NICU journeys. 💜 "The team at RHW went above and beyond to ensure my daughter was comfortable and that we had as much time with her as possible. They did not push us and supported us through every decision we had to make. They also extended our visiting hours, knowing we wouldn't have much time with her, which allowed her to meet a few more family members. When we visited in the mornings, we would often receive a card with her photo and a message about how her night went. The nurses added so many personal touches; it truly felt as though they cared about my daughter, which made it easier to leave her in the NICU. On the last day with our daughter, they gave us a private room that was decorated with beautiful fairy lights. We made memories, including hand/foot prints, keyrings, moulds, and a heartbeat recording, along with other resources I received from the hospital. We had endless support throughout her 10 days of life, and I couldn’t be more grateful to the entire team who had anything to do with Lucy. I would recommend that any NICU parents take advantage of the opportunity to call them at any time. I was up at all hours of the morning expressing, worrying about her, so I would just call, and they’d happily give me an update. They are more than happy to help, and nothing I asked of them was ever an issue." You can support families like Karlie's with a donation to our Christmas Wishlist. Your generosity will help fund the latest in equipment, research, and services for premature and critically ill newborns when they need it most. 💜 Contribute to the Wishlist here: https://lnkd.in/gB76ensA

  • This week we were thrilled to welcome the arrival of a new Voluson Expert 22 Ultrasound for the Maternal Fetal Medicine department. This advanced ultrasound machine will enable clinicians to assess patients with unmatched precision and accuracy, enhancing diagnostics and improving patient outcomes. This purchase was made possible thanks to the generous support of donors at this year's Ladies Luncheon, which raised over $550,000 for The Royal Hospital for Women. A heartfelt thank you to the organising committee - Harriet Waugh, Deborah Symond O'Neil, Adam Halbert, and Georgie Curran for making this all possible.

  • We celebrated World Prematurity Day over the weekend at The Royal by bringing the Newborn Intensive Care Unit to the Level 0 Foyer. 💜 Most people will never need to visit a Newborn Intensive Care Unit or see the advanced equipment used to care for our smallest patients. However, for the more than 1,000 babies who receive care in the NICU each year, this specialised equipment plays a crucial role in giving them the best chance for a healthy start in life. Babies like Nyra depend on these highly specialised machines in order to survive and grow. From ventilators that help with breathing support, to humidicribs that mimic a womb-like environment, each machine has a unique purpose and is integral to the lifelong health of premature and critically ill newborns. 80% of this equipment has been funded thanks to the generosity of donors and supporters. You can support our tiny patients with a donation to the Newborn Intensive Care Unit this World Prematurity Day: https://lnkd.in/gwdiANSM 💜
