Australian Association of Mathematics Teachers reposted this
I just got the new AMEJ and the first article is from a bunch of superstars of SA Mathematics Education Scene. It is a great article showing how Peter Liljedahl's Building Thinking Classrooms ideas, particularly 4 teacher moves into a Year 7 Maths classroom. Well done Anna Beinke and Thomas More College, Salisbury Downs on this great initiative. Thank you for sharing your work on this with other teachers (You have written a detailed and easily applicable example for teachers!) And it is great having Maths Education Superstars from University of South Australia, Amie Albrecht, Lisa OKeeffe and Bruce White working with teachers and classrooms. The Australian Association of Mathematics Teachers sees financial literacy as a crucial part of our students' learning journey. Financial capability helps students develop life skills in critical thinking, decision-making, and problem-solving – all essential for their future success, so it's great to see events like this supporting our teachers.
I’m excited to be attending the FIN-Ed Forum 2024 tomorrow hosted by Talk Money with Ecstra Foundation. This inaugural event brings together experts and educators to focus on financial literacy, fostering valuable discussions on integrating financial education across Australian classrooms. If you are based near Sydney, it’s not too late to register at https://lnkd.in/gp6M3dxV and to join me in hearing from educators and experts on financial literacy, ranging from NSW Treasurer Hon. Daniel Mookhey MLC to 9News Money Editor, author and personal finance commentator Effie Zahos. I’m looking forward to gaining insights, connecting with leaders, and exploring innovative ways to support teachers in delivering high-quality financial literacy education and to share these with our teaching community. If you are not familiar with Ecstra’s education work, they are an independent charitable foundation committed to building the financial wellbeing of Australians within a fair financial system. Through their Talk Money program they have developed a range of teaching and learning resources around financial literacy and also deliver free, face to face or virtual curriculum-aligned workshops. We’re delighted to share Episode 3 of the Strength in Numbers podcast: https://lnkd.in/gFjiqagj featuring Stephanie Thomas, an inspiring early career teacher and winner of the Australian Education Awards Rising Star of the Year 2023. In her discussions with AAMT CEO Allan Dougan, Stephanie explains how she has successfully used a playful approach to ignite student interest in her senior maths classes. Employing a mix of pedagogies, Stephanie has built a classroom culture of curiosity and engagement, motivating her students to be brave and excited about mathematics learning, whilst also managing to cover all the necessary content in a challenging curriculum. For teachers, Stephanie’s journey has lessons in terms of approaches to maths teaching and learning, but also in the value of innovation and in the power of sharing ideas and success stories. If you are interested in describing your work to other teachers, there are many education conferences around the country that seek submissions from presenters. A good place to start is your local state or territory mathematics association: https://lnkd.in/etCSFmzW. For leaders, Stephanie’s story provides food for thought on how best to develop new teachers. It’s clear that Stephanie has been supported by her school executive in allocating her these senior classes at a relatively early stage in her career, in trusting her judgement in how to teach and in nominating her for the award that she richly deserves. This third season of the Strength in Numbers podcast is brought to you by Tutero, a Melbourne-based company that partners with maths teachers using AI powered resources to simplify preparation and help educators focus on student engagement. One of the clearest learnings from our North American Study Tour was to see firsthand the impact of great school leadership. We saw examples of principals and other leaders profoundly shaping a school, building a culture of excellence and high expectations for all students that allowed all students to achieve to their potential. If you are a mathematics leader and are looking for inspiration, one source that you may want to consult is the National Council of Supervisors of Mathematics (NCSM: Leadership in Mathematics Education): https://lnkd.in/eYXzMfh7 Although they are US based, many of NCSM’s resources are just as applicable to mathematics leaders here in Australia as they are to those across the ocean and a great many can be freely accessed online. These include their Journal of Mathematics Education Leadership: https://lnkd.in/gwkERfv7, position papers on topics such as leading with technology, flexible grouping practices and the role of primary maths specialists: https://lnkd.in/ew6Jy623 and even a monthly podcast Learning with Leaders: We Are ALL Math People. #mathseducation #mathsedau #educationalleadership
