What does a great leader look like? Great leaders come in all colours, shapes and sizes, but they all have identifiable characteristics that make up their unique style - authenticity, purpose, self-awareness, compassion, innovation, adaptability, curiousity, vulnerability, strategic thinking, open-mindedness and the list goes on. Understanding our unique strengths and characteristics, and what to use when, allows us to grow and evolve as leaders and to challenge and support our teams and organisations to do more and be better. The First Peoples Leading 2024 #Changemakers have spent valuable time together discovering and analysing leadership concepts and tools, that have helped them to hone and own their unique leadership style. We have delved into purpose, dignity, trust, high performing teams, strengths and operating styles, change leadership, personal & public narratives, negotiation and agreement making, brand and career planning. There have been tears, laughter, debate, encouragement and connection throughout. These #Changemakers have critically evaluated their influence and impact, how they want to carry themselves and lead their organisations for greater outcomes for our mob and the wider community. David Major is a Yuin Maneroo man from south east NSW and is looking at the significance of the Uluru handback and Healthy Country for First Nations leaders. On the anniversary of the Uluṟu handback, I reflect on thirty years of working in the First Nations Healthy Country space. For all of that thirty years I have heard  “committed to….” and “moving towards….” from Governments talking about the return of Country to Traditional Owners and the Co-mgt of conservation lands. Unfortunately, the rhetoric has rarely lined up with the reality - where land that has transferred has often had to be fought for in Native Title or Land Rights-like legal matters. Where co-mgt was supposed to transition to being First Nations led, they are still waiting (sometimes decades into the arrangement) It is time for some leadership and courageous conversations about the journey from willingness to readiness and a call out on broken promises and undelivered commitments. I was on a panel on First Nation’s Leadership at the Australian Private Land Conservation Conference in Sydney a few weeks ago and posed the question “if Governments and private conservation land owners handed all ‘conservation lands’ (including the resources they use to manage them) back to First Nations organisations to manage, do you think they would be in worse condition in 50 years?” the response from the room of more than 100 people (90% non-First Nations) clearly thought that it wouldn’t be. What do you think? Imagine if TO’s were designated as the land management service providers across NSW or Australia? I think Country would end up healthier, would cost less and be more wellbeing centred. 119 First Nations participants from 28 organisations across community, government & corporate sectors, from 5 states and dozens of different mobs....we are so proud to have been trusted by so many amazing leaders and to be part of their growth and development on their unique leadership journey. 2024 has been a big first year as a Not-for-Profit for First Peoples Leading and we're really excited about 2025. We have new program offerings, face-to-face programs and something for our Allies on their journey with our mob.
