⚫️🟡🔴 TMAA proudly joins the nation in honouring National NAIDOC Week!
This week, we will put the spotlight on some of our dedicated members who are particularly invested in the promotion and empowerment of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
We met with Trafficwerx NT and 2023 Rising Star Traffic Controller of the Year Finalist Nathan Davies to discuss NAIDOC Week.
Q: How do you honour First Nations culture in your company?
A: At Trafficwerx NT, we honour First Nations culture by acknowledging the Traditional Owners of the land, the Larrakia People, at the start of all our events. We are committed to fostering cultural awareness and sensitivity through ongoing dialogue with Traditional Owners and integrating cultural values into our practices. We empower Indigenous employment, working with various service providers to recruit, retain, and develop Indigenous employees through career development programs and mentorship opportunities.
Q: How does your company celebrate NAIDOC Week this year?
A: This year, Trafficwerx NT celebrated NAIDOC Week with a range of activities to honour Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture. We set up educational displays to inspire and educate our diverse team about Indigenous history and culture, highlighting all events in Darwin. Additionally, we ran internal campaigns with educational materials, including reading suggestions, viewing recommendations, and social media posts to raise awareness about the significance of NAIDOC Week. We are always looking for ways to do more, and this year we're inviting Indigenous artists to collaborate on unique pieces for our office and potentially create an Indigenous collection for our uniforms.
Q: Does your company have any ongoing engagement initiatives with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities?
A: Yes, Trafficwerx NT is dedicated to ongoing engagement with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities. We have robust employment and training programs for Indigenous job seekers, collaborating with service providers to offer guidance on entering traffic management. Our partnerships with local Indigenous organisations, like PDG-NT in Borroloola, provide meaningful employment opportunities. We actively participate in significant events such as NAIDOC Week and Reconciliation Week, fostering an inclusive atmosphere. Additionally, Indigenous employees like Sam Eveleigh, the 2022 inaugural Indigenous Traffic Controller of the Year and National Traffic Controller of the Year, and Nathan Davies, a 2023 finalist for Rising Star Traffic Controller of the Year, serve as mentors, offering guidance and support to fellow Indigenous staff members. Ongoing engagement is a key factor for us, and we continuously seek new ways to enhance our initiatives.
Thank you to Nathan and the team at TrafficWerx NT! #NAIDOCWeek2024 #TMAACelebratesNAIDOC #NAIDOC
