IWD Feature: "My tough job-seeking experience inspired me to create a free space for job seekers to connect! You know how some people just know what they want to do in life? Well, that wasn't me at all. I bounced around a bit – thought about being a journalist, then a lawyer, before finally clicking with business analysis. And I loved it! Found myself working with dream brands like Louis Vuitton, Hilton, Universal Pictures, and even Warner Music Group in New York. Then in 2012, life took a turn when I decided to take a break to become a mum and spend time with my kids - it was a beautiful time. But when I tried getting back to work in 2017, it felt like running into a brick wall, watching my confidence crack with each rejection. All those years of experience, all my achievements, all those big brands I worked with? It was like none of it mattered anymore. After months and months, I finally got a very junior part-time job. It was a definite hit to the ego but it taught me humility and resilience I never knew I had. In 2021, I moved back to Sydney. And while I was lucky to land a job with Mamamia within a month, it took me back to the challenging months I spent in Hong Kong searching for jobs, feeling like I was unworthy of something so basic as employment. Then 2023 came crashing in, and suddenly everyone around me seemed to be losing their jobs. Including many of my friends and relatives. Watching everyone go through it brought back all those feelings I had when I was job hunting – feeling alone, like you're not good enough, even though none of what is happening is your fault. Then it hit me – who needs support more than someone who's just lost their job? That's how TYFU came to be. I wanted to create this warm, friendly space where people going through job loss could connect with others like them and find jobs together. Because sometimes, just knowing you're not alone can make all the difference in the world. So I did just that, I made TYFU into a job board - community hybrid where job seekers could come and enjoy the community for free, while the recruiters paid an affordable rate for a database of strong candidates available for immediate employment. The community aspect, especially, has had a huge impact - we’ve had a member land a job from an intro made by another member, had multiple recruiters give live sessions, conducted mental health sessions, and employer meets. And after multiple media features and online sessions, we are now working with hundreds of jobseekers without charging a cent. I’m proud to say that TYFU is making lives better - one job at a time.” Leah-Brooke Mano Written by Sathwik Billa Edited by Sara Singh Tak⚡️ #sydney #tyfu #musicindustry #workinsydney #workinaustralia #jobseeker #jobopening #IWD #LinkedNews #InternationalWomensDay #IWDFeature
