Today, we acknowledge International Day to Eliminate Violence Against Women to highlight the prevalence of gender-based violence (GBV) and its impact on climate action. The climate crisis is one of the greatest challenges of our time. It threatens economic, environmental, and social security. For women, girls and gender-diverse people, the crisis is even greater. Approximately one in three women across the globe are subjected to violence. Compounded with climate change, women are exposed to increased risks. The UK Government is working to end gender-based violence through numerous targeted programs. This month, we released a report co-authored by WhatWorks2PreventVAWG, Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, and UK Aid Direct, which outlines how we can address violence through climate action. Australia and the United Kingdom have a long history of cooperation to counter illicit finance and related threats. Dirty money knows no borders – and neither do our efforts to stop it. Last week, the UK launched a bold new campaign to tackle corruption, kleptocrats, and illicit finance. Sanctions announced by the Foreign Secretary David Lammy target notorious kleptocrats and their networks: • Isabel Dos Santos, who embezzled £350 million from Angola, along with her associates Paula Oliveira and Sarju Raikundalia. • Dmitry Firtash, a Ukrainian oligarch who laundered millions in the UK, and his enablers Lada Firtash and Denis Gorbunenko. • Aivars Lembergs, a Latvian politician convicted of bribery and money laundering. His daughter Liga Lemberga was also sanctioned. These measures include travel bans and asset freezes, disrupting the flow of dirty money and making the UK a hostile environment for corrupt actors. This campaign is part of a larger effort to address the devastating impact of corruption: 💷 £1.45 billion in hidden assets identified globally by the UK-funded International Anti-Corruption Coordination Centre, with £631 million frozen. 🌍 42 countries receiving investigative support to recover stolen assets. ⚖️ £21 of stolen assets frozen for every £1 invested in the UK’s International Corruption Unit. Corruption harms societies, undermines democracy, and fuels global insecurity. This new campaign demonstrates the UK’s unwavering commitment to tackling these challenges head-on. #AntiCorruption #Sanctions #GlobalFinance #Leadership

The recent closure of the UK’s last coal power station demonstrated our drive to make the UK a clean energy superpower at home and to champion climate leadership overseas. As The Powering Past Coal Alliance (PPCA) co-chairs, now we're encouraging others to do the same! 🤝    Launched at #COP29 this week, we are excited to see Australia among 25 countries and the EU to launch the Call to Action for No New Coal. The campaign calls for the end of new coal power and for countries to move closer to a future powered by affordable, secure, clean energy.    #UKAustraliaClimate
