Yesterday, I had the privilege of attending the ACS (Australian Computer Society) End of Year SA Forum for Professionals, an event that brought together industry leaders and professionals in our community. It was an excellent opportunity to connect with fellow ACS members and to hear from the esteemed Prof Denis C. Bauer, GAICD (Group Lead at CSIRO). Her talk on "Leveraging IT for Biomedical Breakthroughs" was both insightful and thought-provoking. She reminded us all of the power of innovation and the importance of pushing boundaries, even in the face of challenges. As we approach the end of the year, I'm reminded of the ongoing need to innovate and think strategically. Her message served as a call to action for all of us to continue forging ahead in our respective fields with a forward-thinking mindset. One quote that always resonates with me, and which was also shared during the event, is Warren Buffet’s saying: "If you don't find a way to make money while you sleep, you will work until you die." For me, this quote is not just about financial success, it’s about creating sustainable value in all areas of our lives. Whether it’s building relationships, investing in personal growth, or establishing systems that provide long-term benefits, the key is to work smarter, not harder. It’s a reminder to design our lives and careers in a way that keeps us moving forward, even when we’re not actively working. As a proud ACS Board Member and Honorary Treasurer for SA, I would also like to extend my gratitude to my fellow board members, our SA Branch Manager Andrew Haste, our SA Member Services and Events Manager Jean Mui, our Professional Partner Program members, and all our members for your continued support throughout this year. It is sad to see international students being blamed for the housing crisis by political parties ahead of the federal election, when the problem is actually much more complex. It turns out the suburbs with the most international students actually have above-average rental vacancy rates. "Universities Australia estimates that since the federal government started cracking down on overseas students last year, the economy has already taken a $4.3 billion economic hit and 14,000 jobs have been lost." "The impact of students on the housing market has been heavily contested. In May, one report found that international students made up only 4 per cent of the rental market, while another found the housing crisis would exist even if there were zero international students in the country." Both political parties need to do better and take accountability while actively working on a viable solution. Targeting something which is a significant contributor to our economy is probably not a smart idea and even if it fixed your one big problem you'd really need to think about all the other problems it's going to create as a consequence.
