February 13, 2025, marks the 17th anniversary of the National Apology to the Stolen Generations. On this day in 2008, then Prime Minister Kevin Rudd formally apologised to 🖤💛❤️  💚🖤💙🤍 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples for ➡️ the forcible removal of children from their families, acknowledging the profound grief and loss caused by these actions Check some of the resources being shared by the Healing Foundation, including some events happening this week to commemorate the 17th anniversary of the National Apology to the Stolen Generations. https://lnkd.in/gbmfTXXM

  • Next week marks the 60th anniversary of the start of the Freedom Ride 🚌   In 1965, a busload of uni students (led by trailblazer Charlie Perkins) toured NSW towns like Moree and Walgett, inspired by America's Freedom Riders.   They exposed shocking segregation (e.g. kids banned from the local pool), sparked outrage, and kick-started real change ⚖️   Their courage helped pave the way for the 1967 Referendum. In 2005, they retraced those legendary steps, proving that while we've come a long way, there's always more work to do 🌿

For the Ngoorabul people of the Glen Innes Highlands in NSW 👣, February whispers ancestral wisdom through hatching tuurii (Bell’s turtles) 🐢 in the Severn River and blooming Noocoorbeen (apple tree blossoms)🌳. It’s a season to honour traditions - weaving lomandra🧶, nourishing from kangaroo grass, and stewarding Country’s sacred cycles. ❤️💛🖤 Below are some of the dates in Feb to keep an eye on 🤓   ⭐weavr info session ➡️If you have big plans for your company in 2025 and need your strategies running like clockwork, weavr is here to help. Come along to find out what 'the weavr way' is all about and how it is about to become your favourite thing this year. The next session is on: 📅Thur 20th Feb at ⏱️11:30am (AEST) 👉🏽 Register here: https://lnkd.in/gvsFzkXM   8 February 1974 ➡️ The Woodward Royal Commission, established to address Indigenous land rights in the Northern Territory, delivered ground breaking recommendations that led to the Aboriginal Land Rights Act 1976. Its findings laid critical groundwork for recognising Indigenous sovereignty, reshaping Australia’s approach to land justice and self-determination for First Nations peoples. 🌏🔥   12 Feb 1965 ➡️ The Freedom Ride, led by Charles Perkins and Sydney students, challenged racial segregation in NSW towns like Walgett and Moree, exposing systemic discrimination and galvanising support for the 1967 referendum. A 15-day landmark in Australia’s Indigenous rights movement.   13 Feb 2008 ➡️ National Apology Day 🙏 Marks the anniversary of the National Apology to the Stolen Generations, who suffered trauma because of past government policies of forced child removal. Through hearing the resilient stories of Stolen Generations survivors there is now a willingness for Australians to join in on the healing journey

“Imagine how proud non-Indigenous children would feel about all our cultures, together” 🌱…   We encourage everyone to spend some time understanding a bit more about the history of this land, the ongoing effects that it has had in First Nations Communities, and how this is an undeniable part of our collective history as a nation.   Jan 26th is a Mourning Day. • Celebrating Australia Day on January 26 marks the start of British colonisation - a day of invasion and dispossession for First Australians ❤️🩹 Unlike other former colonies, which celebrate independence, Australia uniquely commemorates colonisation, a date that divides ➗ rather than unites ➕ This isn’t about diminishing our national pride, achievements or collective identity 💚💛, but acknowledging the pain and injustice this date represents for Indigenous Australians ❤️💛🖤💚💙🤍. It’s a reminder of trauma, not unity. What if we celebrated on a date that unites us all? 🤔 Most nations celebrate dates that symbolise independence or progress. Australia could do the same - consider 5th/9th July 1900 (Constitution Act) or 9th May 1901 (proclamation of the Commonwealth) - dates that reflect unity and self-governance as a nation. _______ Here's some of the events that you can support on Jan26, shared by the team from Clothing The Gaps, one of the First Nations organisations that are driving this change. If you can’t support in person, find some First Nations voices online ➡️follow them, hear them, support them and amplify their message online.
