Our Great Barrier Reef Leadership Intensive earlier this year, in partnership with the Great Barrier Reef Foundation, is a shining example of how women and gender-diverse leaders are creating meaningful change for our environment. 21 incredible participants came together on Wulgurukaba Country (Townsville) for an immersive leadership development program designed to amplify their voices, build collaboration, and strengthen grassroots climate action across Reef catchments. The outcomes speak for themselves: 💙 Increased confidence and influence for women and gender-diverse leaders tackling climate change and marine resilience. 💙 A connected network amplifying diverse voices, including Traditional Owners and culturally diverse leaders. 💙 New actions, projects, and campaigns to accelerate community climate efforts for the Reef. Growing solutions for the climate and biodiversity crisis requires new ways of leadership. International evidence demonstrates that response efforts led by and with women and gender diverse people can help achieve more effective and equitable environmental outcomes. The Women's Environmental Leadership Australia (WELA) Great Barrier Reef Leadership Intensive, in partnership with the Foundation, supported a new wave of women’s environmental and climate leadership in the Great Barrier Reef region. The Leadership Intensive brought together women and gender-diverse leaders in Reef catchments to build capacity for climate action, collaboration and resilience. “The wealth of knowledge and experiences of the women in this cohort is extensive and so valuable.” WELA Great Barrier Reef Leadership Intensive Alum, Dr Paige Strudwick Learn more about these changemakers and WELA’s impact: https://ow.ly/WBJN50UrtPO 🐠 Find out more about the WELA National Leadership Program (applications close 2 Feb 2025): https://ow.ly/XZqU50UrtPP 👀 #communityaction #womenpower #leadershipmatters #lovethereef #wearewela

🚨 New data: Nuclear energy debate highlights stark gender divide A recent survey by DemosAu has uncovered a sharp 25-point gender gap in attitudes toward nuclear energy in Australia. While 51% of men support the idea, only 26% of women agree, with concerns about safety and risks playing a significant role. Key Findings: ⚡ Only 18% of women would be comfortable living near a nuclear plant (vs. 38% of men). ⚡ Both genders agree renewables are the cheaper energy solution, with 47% of women and 47% of men aligning on this. ⚡ 57% of women and 43% of men oppose nuclear due to the risks of transporting nuclear waste. ⚡ While 51% of men agreed nuclear energy would be good for Australia, that support dropped when asked if they would be happy to live near a nuclear plant. As Australia approaches an election that could hinge on the nuclear debate, it's clear that a diverse range of voices and concerns must be heard. 💬 Natalie Isaacs, founder of 1 Million Women, summed it up best: “Nuclear energy is a distraction to meaningful climate solutions and women don’t have the time or patience to entertain the Coalition’s proposal.” Image description: A graphic with a glowing golden background shows the text: "51% of men support nuclear energy, only 26% of women do" * * * #climateaction #climateleadership #womensleadership #renewables
