The government of Victoria has announced five days paid leave per year for public sector workers for reproductive health issues including menstruation, menopause and IVF. This is such an important initiative bringing equity into the workplace, and although we would like to see more days of leave provided we welcome this policy. We want to acknowledge the trailblazing work of the @vicwomenstrust who initiated one of the first Menstrual and Menopause leave policies in Victoria and Australia and whose support of various programs including the research and publication of About Bloody Time, the She Listens film Giving Voice to Menopause and for WorkCycle which provide support for menstrual and menopausal wellbeing in the workplace. Viva la Revolution. If you want a quick run through of our three programs for the workplace. Here's a 4 minute video that will give you a good idea of what we offer. https://lnkd.in/g9fwVq3t

Dismantling the menstrual taboo & developing a positive menstrual culture across our workplaces 🩸
About us
WorkCycle is an initiative of the Chalice Foundation, She Listens and The Dugdale Trust for Women & Girls that aims to support women in workplaces throughout their menstrual lives. In 2019, About Bloody Time: The Menstrual Revolution We Have to Have, written by Jane Bennett and Karen Pickering, found that 1 in 3 women wished they could talk more openly and not feel they have to make up an excuse when issues of menstruation impact their capacity to work. WorkCycle is an important next step towards dismantling the menstrual taboo & developing a positive menstrual culture across our workplaces. Three valuable programs are offered by WorkCycle, including: Menstrual Wellbeing at Work, Menopause Wellbeing at Work, and Menopause Conversations at Work.

From our research (Victorian Women's Trust – About Bloody Time) tabling hundreds of people talking about their experience of menopause one thing above all stands out: extraordinary diversity of experiences. Diversity of attitude to menopause, from deeply fearful to majorly excited about it, diversity of symptoms during perimenopause and after, from crippling to nothing other than periods stopping. From this what strikes me as most important is that we continue to foster open, non-judgemental conversations, and useful and informative where possible. Thanks Yvonne for your thoughtful and positive article.

"Small workplace changes – such as improving ventilation, providing more flexible working hours or locations, and making private rooms available for women when symptoms were bad – could significantly help, the inquiry found." We are here to help businesses support and educate their workforce about Menopause, menstruation and the menstrual cycle. As the Financial Review article suggests there are some very simple, practical workplace accommodations that your organisation can implement. It is best if these initiatives are established alongside policy and cultural change to create a more positive environment for everyone. Organisations benefit from introducing programs and support for women and gender diverse folk experiencing menopause and who menstruate. "Employers had “everything to gain” from providing these types of improvements as they kept staff engaged and connected when they were in their professional prime, Senator Smith said. We encourage you to work with staff, to listen to their needs and open up the space for fruitful and ongoing dialogue and conversation. https://lnkd.in/gWHBgWfx

Thanks Women's Agenda. We couldnt agree more! We are delighted to see some workplaces getting involved in helping to change the stigma by creating opportuniteis for conversations, implementing simple effective accomodations (like period products in bathrooms, fans on desks, heatpacks, movement and rest breaks) and being educated about culutral change. Lets noramlise menstruation and menopause in the workplace.
Periods, menopause, endometriosis— menstrual health is all too often viewed with taboo and stigma, and many women feel discomfort when discussing this very natural health topic. In an effort to normalise these conversations, three expert panellists recently spoke on menstrual health at the 2024 Women’s Agenda Health & Wellbeing Summit in Sydney. The session heard from Sydney-based Gynaecologist and the Director of Women’s Health Road Dr Talat Uppal, Ambassador for Endometriosis Julie Snook and corporate hygiene health advocate Rochelle Lake. Thanks to Libra Period Positivity Program for sponsoring this insightful panel.
