National energy storage to increase 33% through new global ZEBRE agreement. Australia’s current 3 gigawatts (GW) of energy storage capacity will grow by up at least a third (1 GW) following the creation of a new battery and solar investment platform by ZEN Energy and 泓德能源 HDRE, a $1.3bn Taiwan-listed renewable energy company. ZEBRE is 70 per cent owned by HDRE, with ZEN retaining 30 per cent. The ZEBRE name is derived from ZEN, BESS and HDRE. The ZEN/HDRE collaboration will focus on developing storage assets here in Australia, as well as in Taiwan and potentially other countries such as Japan. The ZEBRE partnership follows ZEN and HDRE signing a $43m equity transaction in early November this year. Closing the year on a high note! We are excited about this partnership and look forward to working together on Australia’s energy transition.
Thanks RenewEconomy and Sophie Vorrath for breaking the news of our historic MOU with ZEN Energy. Here are the key points: Key Points: - The collaboration could potentially meet 5 per cent of Queensland’s energy demand with 100% green energy - This is one the largest known collaborations anywhere in the world for delivery of 24/7 CFE from renewable energy sources - It delivers a powerful signal of the growing need from a range of market players including the likes of Google and Microsoft demanding 100% green energy (24/7) for data centre needs and the refinement of green fuels for export - At the heart of the collaboration is a combination of assets, groundbreaking optimisation software and a novel construct of long-term contracts that together are capable of delivering three terawatt hours (TWh) of carbon-free electricity annually. - The baseload supply in this agreement will be matched to local renewable sources every hour of every day, with a reliability that exceeds 98 per cent. This ‘Platinum standard’ matching is validated by third party, and it well exceeds the typical availability of coal or nuclear power plants (70 – 90 per cent) - Modelling indicates that the SuperHybrid can be 50% less expensive than nuclear —a critical consideration for energy affordability and also for supplying data centres needed for the surge in AI compute power The key assets and metrics underpinning the supply starting in 2031 include: - 600 MW Djandori Gung-i pumped hydro station - 11 GWh of energy storage (equivalent to 18 hours) - 300 MW electrolyser - 220,000 tonnes p.a. green methanol plant - 50 MW peaker plant - 1.8 GW wind and solar power purchase agreements Here's an excerpt from the story: Sunshine Hydro, a company proposing to combine pumped hydro energy storage with green hydrogen production, has signed a memorandum of understanding with renewable energy gentailer Zen Energy, to develop a “24/7 Sustainable Energy Strategy” for large consumers in Queensland. The agreement includes Zen providing renewable electricity to Sunshine Hydro’s green fuel facilities, and both companies using Sunshine Hydro’s advanced energy storage optimisation program, known as Aesop. Sunshine Hydro’s Aesop software both guides the design of hybrid generation and energy storage assets – pumped hydro and big batteries – and commercial contracts to underpin them and optimises the operations and interacts with each asset’s control system. As the season of giving, we received the best news to wrap up this year! Our long-term not-for-profit partner SAHMRI just announced the BRIGHT Spark Awards, an initiative that recognised the brightest PhD and early-career researchers in 2024 for the quality of their life-changing work. This was only possible due to their annual 'Bright Walk' campaign in South Australia, in which ZEN participated for two consecutive years. In 2023, we raised $15,455, the second-highest fundraising team, and we are delighted to see this collective effort coming to fruition. Besides this initiative, many other critical projects need our attention. Congratulations to the CIS winners! A remarkable 6.4 GW of generation capacity has been awarded under the federal government’s expanded Capacity Investment Scheme (CIS). Of the 19 projects that received contracts, 8 include storage — a crucial step for a stable and reliable grid as Australia transitions to clean energy. Congratulations to our partners ACEN, Neoen, and Gentari for being among the successful project winners. ZEN will seek to expand its storage investments, including our 650 MWh Solar River battery, which was successful in the first CIS tender in September. South Australia also stands out with two major wins: the 300 MW first stage of Neoen’s Goyder North hub and the 274 MW Palmer wind project, driving SA closer to becoming the world’s first gigawatt-scale grid powered entirely by wind and solar. This growing ecosystem of generation and storage is a key step in Australia’s journey to becoming a renewable energy Superpower!
