Australian firm Liberty Industrial works with the world’s biggest energy companies – including BHP, Rio Tinto and Exxon Mobil – to decommission and deconstruct major industrial sites, helping to make way for new energy infrastructure and solutions in the path to #netzero. It is a complex and hazardous task that takes months of preparation. Liberty Industrial are globally renowned for its strong focus on remediation, ensuring each project recovers and recycles as much material as possible, to be returned to the supply chain. In 2023, Liberty Industrial demolished the 11,200-tonne Northern Producer Floating Production Platform in remote #Scotland. The 10-month project was an outstanding success, resulting in 97% of materials being repurposed and recycled. ♻️ ‘There are many companies worldwide that do what we do, but few that have a strong focus on remediation like us,’ says Jed Van Iersel, Liberty Industrial’s Decommissioning Manager. ‘This is a key advantage as more companies look to adopt environmentally and socially sustainable practices. Businesses are now increasingly interested in how they can recycle or upcycle materials and repurpose assets and sites.’ Austrade has proudly supported Liberty Industrial to bring its world-class expertise to wider projects across Europe. Earlier this month I was in Brussels for EU #RawMaterialsWeek where I discussed opportunities for the European Union to work with likeminded, strategic partner countries such as Australia to build the secure, sustainable critical minerals supply chains we need to achieve #netzero by 2050. With some of the largest recoverable #criticalminerals in the world, #Australia is well positioned to become a globally significant supplier of minerals such as nickel, cobalt, #lithium, titanium, and tungsten. In fact, we have abundant resources of all 10 minerals required to produce a lithium-ion battery. Australia has a significant pipeline of major critical minerals projects; over 55 projects are near shovel ready, but they need offtake agreements and equity investment. The #EU has an urgent need for these minerals and looks to diversify its supply chain to counter exposure to volatile prices and production shortfalls. In May this year, Australia signed an MoU with the EU that looks to integrate critical minerals value chains, and deepen collaboration on research, innovation, ESG criteria and international standards. The roadmap for collaboration was endorsed during the conference. It was also a pleasure to host Darryl Cuzzubbo, CEO of Arafura Rare Earths Limited and hear about the importance of the Nolans Project, a fully permitted, construction-ready, single-site ore-to-oxide project in a Tier 1 location. The Australian Government today declared an area off of northern Tasmania’s Bass Strait as suitable for #offshorewind development. This is the sixth area declared suitable for offshore wind development in #Australia. The Bass Strait region is well suited for offshore wind with: 💨 strong, consistent winds ranked amongst the best in the world for wind energy production; 🔌 proximity to areas of high electricity demand; and 🛳️ potential to support infrastructure via the port of Bell Bay. The zone will provide potential to generate 20 GW of offshore wind energy – enough to power millions of homes drive local economic benefit and opportunities for Tasmania. The aim will be to maximise use of local businesses, manufacturers and workers and create opportunities for local apprenticeships and reskilling. The declaration follows consultation with local communities, state and local government representatives, First Nations people and industry. Australia is proudly home to the 5th largest Czech diaspora globally. 🇦🇺 🇨🇿 The President of the Czech Republic, His Excellency Mr Petr Pavel, recently led a business delegation to Australia – the first visit by a Czech President in 29 years. While in #Australia, President Pavel delivered the prestigious Annual Lecture at leading Australian think tank Lowy Institute, where he shared the importance of strong partnerships between democracies across Europe, Australia and the Indo-Pacific to enhance resilience: “By working together, we can pool resources, share expertise, and tackle challenges that no single nation can effectively address on its own.” Australian Prime Minister, the Hon. Anthony Albanese, welcomed President Pavel’s continued advocacy for European engagement in our region: “The relationship between Australia and the #CzechRepublic is underpinned by strong people-to-people ties and continues to grow to meet shared opportunities and global challenges.” Over 160 representatives of Australian companies attended a Czech-Australia business forum and meetings in Sydney to progress cooperation. Australian cleantech company Rux Energy have developed a hydrogen storage solution that could cut port carbon emissions by 90%. 💧🚢 The technology works like a sponge to absorb #hydrogen, enabling storage at higher densities. Rux is attracting interest internationally, with trials underway in the UK and the Netherlands. ‘Australia and the UK uniquely share complementary strategic research, development and technology commercialisation capabilities, and the Australia-UK Free Trade Agreement (#AUKFTA) will catapult both country's ambitions, particularly in enabling the world's energy transition,’ says Rux Founder and CEO Dr. Jehan Kanga. ‘Rux Energy, along with our Australian and UK green hydrogen supply chain and development partners will all benefit from the FTA’s Strategic Innovation Dialogue to drive not just our technology but all the technologies we're dovetailing with, creating a lower cost, more efficient pathway to zero carbon. We are also really looking forward to increased bilateral exchange of talent between Australia and the UK, crucial for sharing knowledge and accelerating our collaborative path to market as we shift toward scale.’ Read more about this pioneering technology and how Australia's hydrogen sector is working with global partners to accelerate decarbonisation: https://lnkd.in/guy_GFmp
