If you write your proposal in the grant portal, you can't easily collaborate with others, use spell-check, or have your copy reviewed by someone else. You're also at risk of losing your work if you don't save it frequently. Instead, use a word processing application to develop your responses. It's such a buzzword: Tip # 4 is all about 𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐠𝐧𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 Grant applications don't fail because you don't have a great idea. They're unsuccessful because there isn't strong alignment between the project and the funding objectives. If your problem statement doesn't match the area that the funder wants to work in - you may have a compelling initiative but not for their program, and you should move on to another opportunity. If your project budget is much more than the maximum grant allowed and you don't have any co-funding - keep looking. Tip # 3 - Look into the funder so you can better understand what drives them. Is it a specific policy? Is it a legacy? What problems are they interested in and what is their actual giving history? For example, we've assessed international grant programs that sound fantastic on paper but a closer look shows that Australian organisations are eligible but rarely chosen for funding. Another example is programs that support Australian charities, but their maximum grant value is significantly less than some of our clients want to apply for. Based on this research and other information, you can make an informed decision about whether the opportunity is worthwhile to invest in. Tip # 2 - Grant Guidelines are a key point of reference for you throughout the grant writing process. Don't just do a quick scan to check if you're eligible. You need to make sure your initiative is well-aligned with the program's priorities - and prove it. Pay attention to the language used and to sections that outline what the funding can (and can't) be used for, examples of successful projects, and requirements that grantees must be able to deliver.
