60 years ago today, a group of University of Sydney students led by Aboriginal activist and fellow Sydney student, the late Dr Charles Perkins, embarked on a bus trip around country NSW. Calling themselves the Student Action for Aborigines (SAFA) group, their mission was clear: to witness firsthand the living conditions of Aboriginal communities and challenge the discrimination against Aboriginal people. What they encountered was a mix of resistance and support. The students' journey captured the attention of the world’s media, raising awareness of the injustices faced by Aboriginal people. Six decades later, three ‘Freedom Riders’ reflect on the enduring impacts of that journey.
