Africa-EU Energy Partnership (AEEP) had the pleasure of participating in the fruitful discussion convened by Africa-Europe Foundation during #PIDAweek2024 on 'Unlocking Sustainable Infrastructure Financing'. AEEP Head of Secretariat Towela Nyirenda-Jere highlighted that: 🤝 Within the context of the #AUEU partnership, there are deliberate efforts to understand the priorities and the drivers of development on both sides. ⚡The AEEP is looking closely at how to bring together all stakeholders, including the private sector, financiers and civil society, who are often missing from dialogues, but crucial for driving progress in the right direction. 💹Success breeds success. We need to showcase successes to step outside the narrative of what is not working and instead highlight positive results that will convince the private sector to join in and catalyse success. ⬅️Yesterday at PIDA Week 2024, AEF hosted the session on "The Missing Connection: Unlocking Sustainable Infrastructure Financing." The session highlighted the importance of enhancing coordination between national governments, including a call for establishing National Coordination Units to help implement multinational projects, better engage with the private sector, and leverage innovative financing modalities, like blended finance and guarantees. ✍🏼Below are a few takeaways that emerged from the session: 🌍Africa and Europe are not only bound by a shared history but also by a collective future, as demonstrated by institutions which foster a sense of community and collaboration between the two continents. 💰Africa's infrastructure financing challenge lies not in a lack of funding but in accessing and leveraging it effectively. 🧱While the AU sets continental priorities, the complexity of regional projects and the challenges of implementation and financing often lead to delayed results. 📈Addressing market fragmentation through initiatives like AfCFTA is key to attracting more private-sector investment in Africa.
