Increasing Circularity and Sustainability in Textiles and Clothing in Europe

About us

CISUTAC aims to increase circularity and sustainability in textiles and clothing in Europe by piloting digital repair and dismantling, by novel recycling processes and by changing sectorial and customers behaviours. It focuses on three types of products: fashion, workwear, and active goods. CISUTAC is a Horizon Europe project, co-funded by the European Union. It started on 1 September 2022 and will last for 48 months. It receives funding from the European Union’s Horizon Europe research and innovation programme under the grant agreement No. 101060375. Views and opinions expressed are however those of the author(s) only and do not necessarily reflect those of the European Union. • On 11 December 2024, our project partner STAM S.r.l. had the chance to showcase its research projects to a wide list of relevant Italian and European key contacts, local and regional policy makers and industry representatives during the Tech Horizon annual event. It was a crucial occasion to touch on key topics relevant to our team and mission, such as circularity, sustainability and the role of technological evolutions to guide and support change. Among their most promising projects, insights on the CISUTAC project have been shared with the audience as a perfect representation of their vision, combining the implementation of new technologies with market trends analysis, collection of stakeholder voice and fostering of new practices at EU level to promote circularity and sustainability in the textile industry.

  • As consumers, we all have a role to play in tackling climate change by having a sustainable consumption behaviour. However, we face significant challenges, primarily due to the higher costs associated with environmentally responsible practices💸 Some EU Member States are testing economic incentives to tackle such issue, like eco-contribution for repair services and reused products in France, and repair vouchers as seen in Germany and Austria, or labour cost reduction for repairs in Sweden. Based on best practices around Europe, our CISUTAC partner ACR+ | Association of Cities and Regions for sustainable Resource management published a document providing an overview of the key instruments within the reach of local and regional authorities to improve the circularity of textile material flows, especially via citizens and engagement. Public procurement can be a powerful driver of sustainability in professional textiles like PPE, uniforms, and flat linen🧑🚒 The public sector can play an important role in supporting innovation, promoting circular procurement to support reuse and recycling and the design of new business models, phasing out current unsustainable practices, favouring transparency and traceability of the value chain ♻️ Based on best practices around Europe, our CISUTAC partner ACR+ | Association of Cities and Regions for sustainable Resource management published a document providing an overview of the key instruments within the reach of local and regional authorities to improve the circularity of textile material flows, especially via citizens and engagement. • Recently, CISUTAC partners from Centexbel and Textile ETP visited Kringwinkel Antwerpen's central warehouse to discover the logistics behind their post-consumer textile activities. A great opportunity to witness first hand two CISUTAC workstations: the firefighter suit disassembly that enables the efficient removal of high-visibility stripes and streamline the entire workflow, and the zipper repair which aims to conduct 6 repairs per hour, with less than 10g of waste per repair and a functional check of repair effectiveness 🏆 These designated workstations not only provide Kringwinkel Antwerpen with increased re-use and sorting capacity but also offer invaluable support to their employees. By integrating technology and semi-automation, they facilitate skill development and enhances efficiency without subjecting employees to the pressures commonly found in a regular economic environment🤝

  • #DidYouKnow that the organisation of used textile collection is quite diverse across Europe? Only few members states have established a national mandatory EPR system that is responsible for the management of used textiles: France, Hungary and the Netherlands🚮 Based on best practices around Europe, our CISUTAC partner ACR+ | Association of Cities and Regions for sustainable Resource management published a document providing an overview of the key instruments within the reach of local and regional authorities to improve the circularity of textile material flows, especially via citizens and engagement. • In the final chapter of our CISUTAC mid-project results journey, we look to the future. 𝗧𝗵𝗲𝗺𝗲 𝟯: 𝗧𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗔𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗱 𝗳𝗼𝗰𝘂𝘀𝗲𝘀 𝗼𝗻 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗹𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗱 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘁𝗲𝘅𝘁𝗶𝗹𝗲 𝗶𝗻𝗱𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘆 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗮𝘁𝗵𝘄𝗮𝘆𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗮 𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗹𝘆 𝗰𝗶𝗿𝗰𝘂𝗹𝗮𝗿 𝘀𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺 𝗯𝘆 𝟮𝟬𝟯𝟱🚀 💻 Unlocking the Future of Sustainable Textiles Our innovative post-consumer textile waste management tool, developed with RISE Research Institutes of Sweden and Centexbel, is set to transform the way we sort, reuse, and recycle textiles. It aligns with upcoming Digital Product Passport legislation and empowers stakeholders to make data-driven decisions🧵 ➡️ https://lnkd.in/dSxqs_ZT 👕 Exploring Future Scenarios for Sustainable Textiles To prepare for the future, CISUTAC partner RISE developed four future scenarios for the textile industry. These scenarios help us imagine different paths toward circularity, guiding stakeholders in making informed decisions about the direction of the industry.  ➡️https://lnkd.in/dWpcQyKH 🌐CISUTAC’s Shared Visions  From EPR to waste management, CISUTAC's shared visions, developed by EURATEX - European Apparel and Textile Confederation in collaboration with all partners, explore different elements of circularity and advises on strategic directions to identify relevant innovation gaps and possible solutions. ➡️ https://lnkd.in/ei9Yj27D 𝗪𝗮𝘁𝗰𝗵 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝘀𝗽𝗮𝗰𝗲! • We continue our CISUTAC mid-project results journey by shifting focus to 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗺𝗲 𝟮: 𝗙𝗼𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗖𝗶𝗿𝗰𝘂𝗹𝗮𝗿 𝗕𝗲𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗶𝗼𝘂𝗿𝘀. Achieving sustainability goes beyond technology: it’s about driving circular practices across the textile industry, empowering businesses and consumers alike. 🔄 A Deep Dive into Circular Textile Business Models Our partner RREUSE - Reuse and Recycling European Union Social Enterprises conducted a comprehensive analysis of repair, reuse, and recycling models across the EU. Strengthening these areas is critical, but policy support and collaboration across the entire textile value chain are needed to scale circular models🛠️ ➡️https://lnkd.in/gj7bwyM2 🌍 Guidelines for Local Embedding CISUTAC partner ACR+ | Association of Cities and Regions for sustainable Resource management worked on recommendations to help local governments adopt circular systems for textile waste management. This includes strategies for waste collection, professional textiles management, and sustainable public procurement. Local authorities play a key role in driving sustainable consumption patterns and embedding circularity in their communities. ➡️https://lnkd.in/gcj_ewKh Circularity isn’t just a goal, it’s a shared responsibility.
