📺 WATCH: We are drowning in #plastic and technology alone won’t get us out of this crisis. We need to transform how we produce and consume plastic – and crucially reduce plastic production to #sustainable levels. 🤝 The final round of the #PlasticsTreaty negotiations kicked off yesterday in South Korea. Delegations agreed that the ‘non-paper’ put forward by the Chair will serve as the basis for negotiations at #INC5. 🚦 The nonpaper is far from perfect - low-ambition language and omissions make it a weak starting point - but it is now the most feasible route forward for reaching an agreement within a reasonable timeline. 📉 The International Plastics Treaty must set ambitious, science-based goals to phase down plastic production. If producers keep churning out plastic as projected, no #waste management system can keep up. Binding, transparent targets across nations are the only way forward.
This week sees the final scheduled #PlasticsTreaty negotiations - it is a unique opportunity to tackle plastic pollution from the moment of fossil fuel extraction to the moment plastic becomes waste. To protect human health and the environment, and to mitigate the climate impacts of plastics, the way out of the plastic pollution crisis is to REDUCE plastic production 📉 🎥 European members from the #BreakFreeFromPlastic take us through the role European decision-makers can and should play in developing an ambitious treaty ☝️ #PlasticPollution #INC5 #BridgeToBusan
