Groningen Seaports has taken a bold step toward a greener #maritime future with a €9.8 million investment in #shorepower installations at #Eemshaven! The installations will be located at the heavy cargo quay and on the south side of Beatrixhaven, reducing emissions and noise pollution in the region. Cas König, CEO of Groningen Seaports, emphasized their commitment to #sustainability, stating that this initiative matches with the port’s long-term vision to attract cleaner #ships and foster a low-emission maritime sector. A feasibility study is already complete, and construction is set to start in 2025, with completion expected by mid-2027. The Dutch Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management has also provided subsidy support for the project. As the leading voice for #onshore #power #supply in Europe, EOPSA - European Onshore Power Supply Association continues to advocate for #OPS adoption across #European ports. By collaborating with key stakeholders, including port authorities, policymakers, and industry leaders, we are shaping a unified, sustainable approach to maritime #electrification. What’s next? Join the conversation-how can we accelerate #OPS adoption across #Europe? Drop your thoughts in the comments! 47 governments are supporting a new plan to charge ships a fee for each tonne of #carbon they emit. This proposal, led by the International Chamber of Shipping and submitted to the International Maritime Organization, aims to reduce #GNG emissions and make green fuels like methanol, ammonia, and hydrogen more affordable. It works: -Ships pay a flat fee based on their #carbon emissions. -The money goes into a fund managed by the #IMO. -The fund supports green fuel development and helps developing countries reduce emissions. The levy is backed by major shipping nations, the #EU, flag states like Panama and Liberia, and island nations at risk from rising sea levels. The fee is expected to range from $18.75 to $150 per tonne of carbon. This plan will be reviewed in April 2025 at an #IMO meeting, where final decisions will be made. If approved, it will be a big step toward making shipping cleaner and reaching #zero #emissions by 2050. At EOPSA - European Onshore Power Supply Association, we fully support efforts to create a more #sustainable future for #maritime. #OPS and alternative fuels are not competing solutions, they are complementary and must go hand in hand. #OPS offers an immediate, proven way to reduce emissions at ports, while alternative fuels address emissions at sea. To achieve #true #zero-#emission shipping, we must integrate #OPS into global #decarbonization strategies. EOPSA - European Onshore Power Supply Association at the 5th Annual Offshore Wind Ports Congress! On January 16, #EOPSA was in Barcelona for the 5th Annual World Congress on Installation and O&M Infrastructure Development for Offshore Wind Ports. Representing us was Juncal Gorostiza from Ormazabal’s primary distribution division, who took the stage to highlight the power of #OPS in #decarbonizing #maritime transport. Speaking on behalf of #EOPSA, Juncal emphasized why #OPS is a game changer for cleaner ports and tackled the technical and regulatory challenges of electrifying today’s gllobal fleet. The event, organized by TBM Group, brought together key players from the wind industry, wind farm developers, operators, researchers, and policymakers all working towards a more sustainable future. Collaboration between the #maritime, #energy, and port sectors is essential for driving change. That’s why EOPSA - European Onshore Power Supply Association is committed to promoting #OPS solutions that make cleaner ports a reality! A big thank you to Juncal Gorostiza for representing EOPSA - European Onshore Power Supply Association. #OPS #Electrification #EOPSA #AlianzaNetZeroMar #Ormazabal #Ports #SustainableMaritime
President’s Word: Welcome to 2025 ‼️ ; an important year for OPS 🔌 in a global context. As Jacques Delors famously said “Europe is a beacon of hope in a globalized world” 🌍 and it is our duty to press on. Onshore Power Supply (OPS) aligns perfectly with the goals of both the Green Industrial Plan and the Draghi Competitiveness Report: Investing in OPS is about more than decarbonization—it’s about competitiveness, innovation, job creation, education, and, above all, hope. This is why we must continue to advocate for OPS and raise awareness about its transformative potential. At EOPSA, we understand that implementing OPS can seem overwhelming—especially for those unfamiliar with the intricacies of advanced electric systems. This hesitation often leads to delays that we cannot afford in the face of climate urgency. But here’s the good news: You don’t have to face these challenges alone. This year, EOPSA plans to introduce a bespoke advisory segment for both members and non-members. Our goal is to demystify OPS implementation by addressing key strategic questions: Who are the essential stakeholders? What are the high-level costs? What are the first steps? What information is critical to success? What kind of leadership will drive progress? We are here to help you navigate the complexities and lay the foundation for a successful OPS program. Together, we will ensure that 2025 is the year we break barriers and accelerate adoption. 📢 Then, our 2025 calendar if very full as we will be advocating for microgrids, lowering AFIR to 400GT vessels, sharing best practices, gather key OPS information, visit amazing ports and more. By joining the OPS movement, not only do we contribute to a sustainable future but also earn recognition for leadership in bringing together the best experts and deliver meaningful results for our planet and local communities. Lastly, what a sense of pride that our General Assembly, last December, voted for the new board. It’s truly a privilege to have such amazing leaders willing to step up and contribute to our mission. Their diverse expertise, enthusiasm, and commitment to driving sustainable change will be invaluable as we work together to advance OPS. We’re incredibly grateful for their support and look forward to the journey ahead with this fantastic team.
