  • EU Specialty Food Ingredients welcomes the publication of the Vision for Agriculture and Food. We align with the priorities highlighted in the Vision, particularly: 🔹 Enhancing the attractiveness of the agri-food sector through innovation as a key driver. 🔹 Ensuring competitiveness and resilience, adhering to EU standards without creating competitive disadvantages. 🔹 Recognizing the agri-food sector's critical role in the transition to a low-carbon economy.   However, we express our regret that once again the food dimension has been overlooked, as the Vision focuses on agriculture, disregarding the rest of the supply chain. This omission represents a missed opportunity to establish robust cooperation with the food industry for an attractive, sustainable, innovative, competitive, and resilient transition of the EU agri-food system.   EU Specialty Food Ingredients remains committed to supporting a future-proof EU agri-food sector and looks forward to the establishment of an annual #FoodDialogue.   #Agrifood #AgrifoodPolicy #FutureOfFood #FoodInnovation #FoodIngredients

  • For the first time since its creation, and following the implementation of the Transparency Regulation, the European Commission is evaluating the performance of the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA). This is a unique opportunity to foster a cutting-edge and safe specialty food ingredient sector that enhances the global competitiveness and excellence of the European food and beverage industry. EU business operators are willing to provide EFSA with the essential information required to assess the ingredient’s safety. However, they are increasingly sceptical about the value of an EU application, as they perceive it as a waste of money and effort, which deters new applications. The speed and consistency of EFSA’s scientific evaluations are essential for maintaining the economic viability and competitiveness of the specialty food ingredients industry in the EU. • EU Specialty Food Ingredients welcomes President Ursula von der Leyen’s launch of the EU #CompetitivenessCompass and commends the EU Commission Presidency's commitment to: - Accelerating innovation - Establishing a predictable legislative framework for clean technology - Strengthening the resilience and economic security of the EU industry By investing 3-8% of its annual turnover in research and development, the EU Specialty Food Ingredients industry leads innovation within the food sector. A supportive regulatory environment focused on innovation is considered important for maintaining competitiveness and navigating the green transition.   EU Specialty Food Ingredients looks forward to the upcoming legislation, namely the #CleanIndustrialDeal, #Omnibus, and #EuropeanBiotechAct, to reduce regulatory and administrative obstacles that have hindered our industry over the past decade. We are confident that through collaborative efforts, we can foster a #competitive, #innovative, and #resilient EU industry that sets a benchmark in sustainable practices and contributes to economic growth. #FoodIngredients

  • On January 27, #DGAGRI launched the European Board on Agriculture and Food (EBAF) and published the list of its 30 members.     While farmers, non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and civil society have substantial representation, the EU food and food ingredient industry is underrepresented. This lack of recognition overlooks the considerable economic importance of the EU food sector and the innovative contributions of the specialty food ingredients sector towards the sustainable transformation of the EU agri-food system. EU Specialty Food Ingredients congratulates FoodDrinkEurope and EBAF colleagues for their appointment and wishes good work to the #EBAF and the AGRI-FOOD Commissioner, Mr. #Hansen.

  • 📢 The European Commission is evaluating the performance of the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) for the first time. In the EU, most specialty food ingredients must first undergo a premarket authorisation process including a safety assessment from EFSA, before being allowed to be used in foods and beverages. Applicants are willing to provide EFSA with the essential information required for assessing ingredients' safety. However, the excessive and illogical nature of certain EFSA’s inquiries results in time-consuming responses, unnecessary delays, and growing frustration of applicants. While maintaining a clear distinction between assessing and managing risks, the European Commission has a responsibility to ensure that EFSA performs risk assessments efficiently and proportionately. Urgent actions are needed to recognise EU applicants as valuable partners in a competitive global market. It’s time to act and not miss out on food ingredient innovation within the EU. 📄 Read our new factsheet to learn more about the EFSA review, novel specialty food ingredients’ production and few proposed quick fixes: https://lnkd.in/eFFVUCWE #FoodIngredients #FoodSafety #FoodInnovation
