📣 For the first time since its creation, the European Commission is evaluating the performance of the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA). This is a unique opportunity to foster a cutting-edge and safe specialty food ingredient sector that enhances the global competitiveness and excellence of the European food and beverage industry. Indeed, to be used in food and beverages most specialty food ingredients must first undergo a pre-market authorisation process that involves safety assessments from EFSA. The speed and consistency of EFSA’s scientific evaluations are essential for maintaining the economic viability and competitiveness of the specialty food ingredients industry in the EU. However, EU business operators are increasingly sceptical about the value of an EU application, as they perceive it as a waste of money and effort. Urgent measures are necessary, recognising EU applicants of specialty food ingredients as valuable partners in a competitive international environment. It’s time to act and not let go of this incredible asset! 📑 Read our factsheet to learn more about this review, why it is important for EFSA to improve and few quick fixes that could be taken to reassure applicants: https://lnkd.in/eUJr8Rf3 #FoodIngredients #FoodSafety

EU Specialty Food Ingredients has prepared a comprehensive brochure for its members that focuses on the labelling of specialty food ingredients in relation to allergies, intolerances, and other health conditions. This informative document uses real-life examples to clearly explain the regulatory provisions that apply to those specialty food ingredients known to cause allergies or intolerances. Additionally, it offers guidance on the process of obtaining an exemption for an ingredient from the list of substances that can trigger allergies or intolerances. 📣 We are very happy to present our new infographic ‘Understanding the threshold for nanoparticles‘. In the EU, a nanomaterial is defined by the proportion of solid particles in a material, where 50% or more of these particles fall within the size range of 1 to 100 nanometres. However, this single criterion does not sufficiently define a nanomaterial, and many other scientific criteria should therefore be included. Regardless of its value (1, 10, 50 or 90 %), the threshold for nanoparticles does not impact the safety of substances like food additives, novel food ingredients and nutrients. No matter the percentage of nano-particles that may be present, the safety of these ingredients is assessed by the European Food Safety Authority according to adequate methodologies.
