Disease-related malnutrition can lead to higher mortality rates in patients and higher costs for healthcare systems. Thus, the work of dieticians is essential to improve treatment outcome.
According to the World Health Organization, between 24 and 40 percent of patients with diseases like cancer, chronic kidney disease, cardiovascular or pulmonary disease lack nutrients.
This can lead to:
👉 loss of skeletal muscle
👉 physical and mental dysfunctions
👉 delayed wound healing
👉 poor clinical outcomes
Disease-related malnutrition can be caused by inflammation or hormonal changes. Some cancer patients have a syndrome called cachexia. It causes changes in metabolism and appetite and can make therapy less effective. Studies suggest that as much as 30% of all cancer deaths are caused by cachexia and about 80% of patients with advanced stage cancers are affected by the condition.
The nutritional needs depend on the disease itself and the therapy phase. The ESPEN - European Society for Clinical Nutrition and Metabolism states that the incidence of malnutrition increases up to 40-80 percent during oncological treatments. It’s easier for the patient to cope with the side effects of a cancer therapy if they go into it well-nourished. That’s why our colleagues at Fresenius Kabi provide medical nutrition, in the form of enteral and parenteral nutrition, allowing healthcare professionals to make the right decision according to the patient’s individual needs, medical diagnosis, and treatment goals. Patients can also be supported with a prehabilitation plan – a nutrition program that starts a month before surgery, for instance.
The dieticians at our Helios Kliniken GmbH and Quirónsalud hospitals consult the patients on all nutritional challenges. They help patients with metabolic diseases like diabetes or assist in navigating changes in taste that may come with chemotherapy. Sweet food can suddenly taste too sweet, meat can taste bitter, and many things just taste mushy. Dieticians develop specific nutritional plans to optimize the nutrients intake – be it with creative recipes or clinical nutrition.
At Helios, our medical experts strive to better understand the nutritional needs of their patients. Clinical studies on nutritional therapy for chronic heart failure, malnutrition in the centralized care of colorectal cancer patients and parenteral nutrition have been completed or are underway at the Herzzentrum Leipzig GmbH, Helios Dr. Horst Schmidt Kliniken Wiesbaden, Helios Klinikum Bad Saarow and other hospitals.
It's time to put the spotlight on the benefits of carefully chosen food for patients. That’s why Fresenius Kabi is now board member at SNE - Specialised Nutrition Europe. SNE promotes making malnutrition screenings an integral part of healthcare. Providing nutritional care in primary care and for in- and outpatient care can have a huge impact on treatment outcome.
