  • Let’s get this competitiveness push right! 💪 Today, the Commission has launched its #CompetitivenessCompass with the objective of achieving the renewal of Europe’s competitive strength. From tackling excruciatingly high #energyprices to developing #qualityjobs & a skilled workforce, the Compass contains many initiatives in it that have relevance for the European non-ferrous #metals industry. But how much will these initiatives actually deliver what we need? ⬇️   ⚡On energy, the focus is on the mid-term, with not much action for short-term solutions and, more concerning, some of the proposed measures will lead to additional costs if wrongly designed. The Commission acknowledges this, but therein lies the issue. With electro-intensive industries like non-ferrous metals shedding European jobs and factories, we need urgent action now! ⌛   🧪On #REACH, the Compass mentions the need to revise it to bring simpler and faster decision making on important hazards. Non-ferrous metals are covered by REACH and need a sound, efficient and predictable risk management framework that takes into account metal specificities, instead of one-size-fits-all.   💡While many elements remain unclear, some others do stand out – like the #omnibuspackage and the clear desire of the new Commission to untangle us from some of the red tape they introduced just last year. Eurometaux will support in every way possible the simplification effort here to help many of our own smaller sized companies, many family run businesses, have a more sustainable reporting load.   🎯👏Finally the pick of the package for us is surely the confirmation of the #MetalsActionPlan, which we genuinely welcome and support. Here is a great chance to do something for our strategic sector and we are happy to see that there are many overlapping areas between our Action Plan & the Compass! Here’s what we need:   ✅Unburdened access to market for European Non-Ferrous Metals   ✅An EU Energy Policy for Clean and Affordable Energy   ✅An EU policy to foster global competitiveness and support investments in the transformation of our sector   ✅Secure Access to Raw Materials from primary and secondary sources   ✅An EU trade Policy that works for industrial resilience   ✅An EU Social Policy for High Quality Industrial Jobs   This is our call for specific, urgent and lasting action now to give our sector the boost it needs to get us into the promised land of renewed European industrial competitive strength!   👉If there is no European metals industry, there is no energy or digital transitions. If there is no European metals industry, there is no defence.   Read more about our call here: https://lnkd.in/dRThvSVH #CompetitivenessCompass #CleanIndustrialDeal #Industry #EUcompetitiveness #REACH #CriticalRawMaterials

But as global price takers, our industry can only compete if Europe creates the right conditions for investment and growth. The #CleanIndustrialDeal must:    ✅ Ensure affordable energy to power our industry  ✅ Reduce red tape and permitting delays for new projects  ✅ Strengthen trade policies to create a fair level playing field    “As price takers on the global market, we can only influence our costs. We need strong, clear, and consistent policies that enhance our #competitiveness and promote investments in our industry. This includes access to fossil-free energy at competitive prices, reducing administrative burdens and creating a fair level playing field while upholding our ambitious climate goals," said Daniel Peltonen, President of Boliden Smelters. "We strive to spearhead the green transition, but to become frontrunners, we need collaboration and initiatives that focus on strengthening the EU’s industrial competitiveness and creating the right conditions for the metal industry in Europe to develop and thrive,” he added.    🗣️Industry voices have consistently called for strong, clear, and consistent policies that enhance competitiveness, not make it harder to operate. The Clean Industrial Deal is Europe’s chance to turn things around.    ✨ Say Yes to European Metals!   Learn more about our call here: https://lnkd.in/dRThvSVH #CleanIndustrialDeal #Competitiveness #MadeInEurope #EUIndustry #NonFerrousMetals #MetalsActionPlan

Critical Raw Materials: Why They Matter for the 🇪🇺 Global Gateway Strategy Critical raw materials (CRMs) are crucial for all modern technologies—they don’t just improve our lives, they also boost our competitiveness. That’s why they’re essential for modernizing industry and driving both the green and digital transitions. 🔋 Smartphones rely on lithium and cobalt for batteries, and germanium for displays. ⚡️ Renewable energy technologies depend on gallium for solar panels. 🚙 Electric vehicles need nickel or manganese for batteries. However, Europe’s limited reserves of these materials may put us at a strategic disadvantage. To address this, the Global Gateway Strategy focuses on building international partnerships that guarantee reliable supplies in a sustainable, transparent, and mutually beneficial way—supporting EU citizens, businesses, and partner countries alike.

The metals industry needs policies that foster both #competitiveness and #sustainability. That’s why the #CleanIndustrialDeal should ensure:     ✅ Removal of investments barriers to improve framework conditions for the non-ferrous metals industry and foster global competitiveness    ✅ Increased coherence between policies to support the grow of EU recycling industry capacity   ✅ A balanced and efficient #REACH revision that prioritises uncontrolled risks without stifling metals production     👉 As highlighted by France Capon, Secretary General of EPMF (European Precious Metals Federation), “The Clean Industrial Deal must lay the foundations for an enabling environment for the production and recycling of precious metals in the EU. It must create the conditions for the metals industry to be competitive and achieve the objectives of the EU Green Deal at the same time. There are many actions the EU can take, including removing barriers to access to secondary materials containing precious metals within and outside the EU, and ensuring coherence between different EU policies, and especially between circularity and chemicals management.”     👉 Our industry is calling for action. • ❗𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗖𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗻 𝗜𝗻𝗱𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗗𝗲𝗮𝗹 𝗠𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗧𝗮𝗰𝗸𝗹𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗘𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗴𝘆 𝗖𝗿𝗶𝘀𝗶𝘀  ⚠️ Without competitive energy prices, Europe’s metals sector cannot survive. Since 2020, 20 European metals facilities have shut down —a major blow to our clean tech supply chain. The #CleanIndustrialDeal and the Affordable Energy Action Plan must step in with:     ✅ Immediate energy relief for energy-intensive industries   ✅ Smart mechanisms to stabilise renewable energy costs   ✅ Long-term policies to ensure globally competitive electricity prices      As stressed by Eurometaux’s President Evangelos Mytilineos, “The Clean Industrial Deal and the Affordable Energy Action Plan must deliver short-term measures to secure energy at globally competitive rates for Europe’s energy-intensive industries. Specific proposals have been made, including Greece’s ‘Green Pool’ which addresses the additional cost of matching variable RES supply to stable industrial demand. Similar ideas can be found in the Draghi report and in the Antwerp conclusions, which were signed by producers and consumers alike. The clock is already past midnight, we expect action.”      👉 Our industry is calling for action.
