    Director General at Fertilizers Europe

As the year draws to a close, I am proud to reflect on the work of our association this year. Together with our members, we have advanced critical conversations and driven awareness on pressing issues in the agri-food sector. The highlights:   ✅Dialogue with Policy Makers: We engaged in constructive dialogues with policy-makers, ensuring the key concerns of our sector are addressed in vital legislative discussions.   ✅ Strategic Dialogue on the Future of Agriculture: Our President Leo Alders a critical role in shaping the discussions on the future of farming in Europe, highlighting the critical role of the #fertilizer sector in #foodsecurity, agricultural productivity and environmental performance.   ✅ Advocating for EU #StrategicAutonomy and Food Security: By raising awareness of the growing challenges posed by external competition, particularly from Russian fertilizer imports, we have underlined the need for a level playing field with third countries to safeguard Europe’s strategic autonomy and the long-term sustainability of our agri-food system.   ✅ Launch of the Annual Conference: We brought together key stakeholders from the EU agri-food chain to discuss the evolving challenges and opportunities for the agriculture sector and fertilizer industry, paving the way for a sustainable future.   ✅ The #AntwerpDeclaration: We joined industry leaders in calling for a #EuropeanIndustrialDeal alongside the #EUGreenDeal to boost competitiveness, support energy-intensive industries, and accelerate the green transition through renewable energy investments. Thank you Cefic and Marco Mensink for leading this initiative.   ✅ Fostering Relationships with Our Members: We have worked to strengthen our connections with members, ensuring their voices are integral to our advocacy efforts and enhancing our collective impact.   ✅ Safety Seminar: We held our annual safety seminar to share best practices and reinforce a culture of safety and continuous improvement across the industry.   ✅ Global Fertilizer Day: Under the theme "Rooted in the Past, Growing a Sustainable Tomorrow," we celebrated the industry's role in global #foodsecurity, sustainable farming and the decarbonisation journey.   These milestones reflect the dedication, passion, and collaborative efforts of our members and staff.   A heartfelt thank you to everyone who contributed to these achievements. Together, we are shaping a sustainable and resilient future. Here’s to continued progress in 2025!

  • The European Union's increasing reliance on Russian fertilizers poses significant risks to its agricultural sector and #foodsecurity. The EU's growing dependence on Russian fertilizers mirrors its previous reliance on Russian natural gas, raising concerns about potential geopolitical vulnerabilities. This dependency could lead to supply disruptions, as Russia has previously considered restricting exports of critical commodities to "unfriendly countries." To safeguard its agricultural sector and food security, the EU must diversify its #fertilizer sources and support domestic production. The EU has the capacity to fully meet its nitrogen #fertilizer demand through local production, reducing reliance on imports. However, Russian producers, benefiting from low state-subsidized gas prices, are undercutting European producers. To protect the EU’s agricultural resilience and #strategicautonomy, urgent action is needed to stop rising Russian fertilizer imports and strengthen #EU production. #stopRussianfertilizers https://lnkd.in/eUwRc2a4

  • Our Board Member, Pavel Hanus, reflects on the vital contribution of the #fertilizer industry in ensuring #foodsecurity and in supporting ambitious #decarbonisation goals.   In the face of challenges such as rising imports and high energy prices, our industry remains committed to being a reliable partner in fostering sustainable growth. However, we cannot achieve this alone. Collaboration with policymakers and stakeholders is essential to building a resilient future. By working together, we can secure a resilient food system in #EU and accelerate progress toward Europe’s decarbonisation goals.

  • Congratulations to the new college of Commissioners as they officially begin their mandate today! This marks a pivotal new chapter for Europe—a moment to tackle critical challenges with bold action and collaborative solutions. The Antwerp Declaration calls for a European Industrial Deal to complement the EU Green Deal, safeguarding quality jobs and driving the investments needed for Europe’s transition to climate neutrality. By prioritizing simplification, reducing burdens and addressing soaring energy costs we can pave the way for a competitive, innovative, and resilient European industry that leads globally and stays sustainable. The #fertilizer sector is a key strategic pillar for the EU—crucial for ensuring food security and leading the way in decarbonizing food production .To remain remain competitive and continue the decarbonisation journey the sector needs a dedicated strategy for fertilizers and targeted support for investments. The Industrial Deal is not just an ambition—it’s the roadmap to making the Green Deal work for Europe. We look forward to working closely with the new Commission to transform these priorities into tangible, measurable progress. #AntwerpDeclaration https://lnkd.in/e8iqT6E2

  • While Europe has diversified its gas sources, it’s now deepening dependency on Russian nitrogen fertilizers—essentially gas in solid form. Replacing one dependency with another puts Europe’s strategic autonomy and climate goals at risk. Prioritizing low-carbon, EU-produced fertilizers is essential to strengthening both food security and the green transition. #stoprussianfertilizers https://lnkd.in/ezv7_PD9
