On January 15th from 15:00 to 18:00, we are hosting a unique event at Technopolis, Mechelen, where companies and STEM-schools come together to discuss how to encourage young people to pursue STEM education. The collaboration between the Belgian metals sector and STEM education is crucial for the future of the industry and the development of talented youth. What can you expect? **Inspiring case studies: Learn about successful partnerships between metal companies and schools, from sponsoring STEM camps to organizing workshops and company tours. **Small group sessions: Explore solutions and new ideas with other participants to motivate young people in primary school, secondary school, and higher education to choose STEM. **Networking opportunities: Meet HR and recruitment professionals from the metal industry, representatives from schools, education boards, and STEM academies. The goal is simple: to inspire each other on how to show young people how exciting and future-focused STEM education can be, and helping companies attract talented future employees. FMV Industry Night at KU Leuven: Inspiration and Connection Last week, we hosted an incredible FMV Industry Night where KU Leuven graduates had the opportunity to connect with leaders from the industry. Around 50 students were registered, and the evening was packed with energetic speeches from experts shaping the future of sustainability and innovation. Here's a quick recap of the highlights: 🔹 Steffen Robert from EIT RawMaterials introduced the Tapojärvi Open Innovation Challenge 2025—a unique opportunity for chemical engineering, metallurgy, and forest industry students to make a real environmental impact. The challenge offers a €10,000 cash prize and the chance to work with Tapojarvi, a leader in industrial circular economy. 🔹 Rui Gao from VITO shared her inspiring journey from Beijing University to Harvard University, and finally to Vito, where she’s making strides in the field of research. Her story captivated students and highlighted the power of an international academic career. 🔹 Wouter Crijns from ResourceFull, a proud KU Leuven graduate, challenged the students with his vision for climate solutions. His company is researching low-impact concrete solutions, many of which are already transforming the industry. 🔹 Elise Venken and Manuel Vissers from Aurubis gave an inside look at life in the industry titan. Despite being recent graduates, they’ve already achieved significant milestones and are thriving at Aurubis, where their contributions are valued and nurtured. The evening concluded with networking over drinks and snacks, where vibrant discussions unfolded around company values, career opportunities, and the future of sustainable industries. FMV Meets UGent Metals Consortium: A Successful Event on Sustainable Metals R&D and Production What an incredible event! The FMV meets Ghent University Metals Consortium: Metals R&D – Sustainable Processes and Products was a huge success, attracting over 80 professionals from both academia and the metals industry. We had the privilege of hearing from outstanding speakers, including: 🔹 Marian Flores Granobles, Ph.D. (FINOCAS)- ArcelorMittal's Climate Roadmap 🔹 Isabelle Tolleneer (CRM Group) – Sustainable Processes and Product Innovation at CRM 🔹 Bruno Schepers and Mehdi L. (Aluminium Duffel) – From Post-Consumer Scrap to Sustainable Products 🔹 Jimmy De Wilde (Aperam) – Sustainable Steel, Responsibly Made by Aperam Their presentations provided invaluable insights into how the metals industry can evolve toward more sustainable practices and products. In addition to these industry leaders, we were inspired by young, promising professors who showcased their groundbreaking research projects in sustainability and metal innovation: 🔹 Gwenny Thomassen - The environmental life cycle sustainability of metal matters - STEN's experience 🔹 Tom Depover - Environmental assisted degradation of metals 🔹 Inge Bellemans - High-temperature metallurgy: crucial at making our industry circular 🔹 Kris Hectors - Numerical and data-driven metal fatigue research The event was fully booked, a clear reflection of the growing interest in sustainable metallurgy. After the talks, attendees had the opportunity to network and exchange ideas over freshly made pizzas and drinks – a fantastic way to continue the conversation in a relaxed setting.
