⏰ Join our colleagues at the Institute for European Environmental Policy UK (IEEP UK) for two online events 👉 On 17 January they will be hosting a webinar on the EU Environmental Crime Directive and its significance for UK/EU environmental policy divergence. With a great panel of speakers moderated by our Chiara Antonelli, Head of the Climate and Circular Economy programme. ℹ️ More info and registration: https://lnkd.in/efYg-Mnz 👉 On 22 January, tune in for their Annual Conference! Since Brexit, EU environmental legislation has been developing at a fast pace, by and large setting higher environmental standards than the UK in many areas. The UK government has clearly indicated a desire to develop a closer relationship with the European Union, providing an opportunity to raise the ambition for the UK's environmental policy. Esteemed guests from European governments and institutions will discuss good practices that the UK might benefit from, as well as explore how the UK and EU can better cooperate on European environmental policy and governance. ℹ️ More info and registration: https://lnkd.in/epdkEDBu #Brexit #EnvironmentalPolicy #EnvironmentalCrime

IEEP is a Brussels-based think tank specialised in environmental policy and sustainability.
About us
The Institute for European Environmental Policy (IEEP) is the only Brussels-based think tank specialised in environmental policy and sustainability. Established in 1976, IEEP has advised generations of experts and policymakers since the very beginning of European environmental legislation. As an independent, unbiased, impartial, and evidence-based institute, we are committed to supporting organisations to better navigate the European environmental policy landscape and advance impact-driven sustainability policy across the EU and beyond. Our multidisciplinary team works with EU institutions, international organisations, academia, and civil society, providing integrated approaches and multiple perspectives across several research areas covering agri-food, biodiversity, land use, trade, climate and circular economy. IEEP is also the coordinator of many initiatives, such as the Think Sustainable Europe network and the Think2030 platform, through which it brings together stakeholders from think tanks, interest groups, and industry representatives across Europe with very different backgrounds. In addition, we coordinate the work of the Green Trade Network, the EU Wellbeing Economy Coalition, and the European Sustainable Agriculture Dialogue. IEEP is recognised for its thought leadership in many topics, such as the new vision for the CAP, and Introducing ETS to the agri-food sector. We also work closely with universities across Europe by providing them student placements on a regular basis.

📜 IEEP is excited to announce the appointment of Antoine Oger as the Institute's Interim Executive Director 👏 Antoine's appointment follows the departure of Eero Yrjö-Koskinen in December. A seasoned expert in EU’s internal and external climate policies, Antoine first joined IEEP in 2021 to lead the Global Challenges and SDGs team, working on trade and sustainable development amongst other things. In 2023, he was appointed Research Director to coordinate IEEP's overall research work, fundraising efforts, and IEEP's representation. We are glad to have Antoine onboard and wish him the best of luck in this new exciting role!

🤝 Combining competitiveness and climate commitments 🍃 The new European Commission took office last December opening a new chapter for EU environmental and climate policies. It is expected to present on 26 February 2025 its new EU growth strategy, the Clean Industrial Deal, to boost European industry competitiveness and investments in clean technologies. However, it remains unclear to which degree this plan will be compliant with the European Green Deal’s objectives and spirit. This #Think2030 policy brief, written with our #ThinkSustainableEurope member Energiaklub Climate Policy Institute, follows our Think2030 Dialogue webinar on some of the priorities of the Hungarian Presidency to the Council of the European Union, gathering exchanges and thoughts from the panelists. 💡 Key recommendations include: ➡️ Enhancing competitiveness but not as an alternative to sustainability ➡️ Aligning industrial policies with climate goals and EU values ➡️ Implementing Carbon Border Adjustments but including exemptions ➡️ Striving for stricter cooperation with third countries and more involvement in the decision-making to reach climate targets ➡️ Scaling up climate finance commitments ➡️ Reinforcing Climate Diplomacy at COPs ➡️ Embedding trade and climate in a more coherent and just way ℹ️ https://lnkd.in/e5m4JxMt With the participation of Luc Bas, Janez Potocnik, Viktória Lilla Pató, Sirpa Pietikäinen, Tomas Jungwirth Brezovsky, Veronika Hunt Safrankova, Anders Wijkman, András Huszár, Nathalie Bernasconi-Osterwalder, Jonathan Wilson. #EUGreenDeal #CleanIndustrialDeal #GreenTrade #ClimateTargets IEEP, in collaboration with members of the Think Sustainable Europe network and other national entities, organises Think2030 events (national Dialogues) twice a year, in conjunction with the rotating Presidency of the Council of the EU. The next one will be organised in Warsaw on 28 March together with Instytut Reform and WiseEuropa. Stay tuned for more info!

In conversation with policy-makers on climate mitigation in the agri-food sector 👨🌾 Last week we organised our first MEPs breakfast briefing at the European Parliament hosted by MEPs Elsi Katainen, Pär Holmgren and Anna Strolenberg. Our colleagues Julia Bognar, Head of Land Use and Climate, and Melanie Muro, Head of CAP and Food, discussed how to incentivise climate mitigation across the agri-food value chain. Together with MEPs, policy advisors, and political assistants, we explored if the current policy framework, in particular looking at agricultural emission cuts and increased land-based carbon sinks, is enough for 2040 and what reforms will be needed to enhance climate ambition in the Agriculture, Forestry and Other Land Use (AFOLU) sector. In our study with Trinomics and Ecologic Institute we explore the potential of an emissions trading system (ETS) for the agricultural sector as a policy instrument operationalising the polluter pays principle for agricultural greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in the EU. In our upcoming study with Trinomics, Wageningen University & Research and Ricardo plc we will continue to explore the potential of different policy options, including an emissions trading system (ETS) for the agricultural sector. Stay tuned for the follow-up study assessing potential environmental, economic, and social impacts. ℹ️ These breakfast briefings are dedicated to policy-makers to inform them about European environmental policies and gain insights relevant to the work of the European Parliament in the coming months. For more information on this and future breakfast briefings, contact Irene Chiocchetti at ichiocchetti@ieep.eu. 🎙️ PODCAST | Financing the transition to resilient and equitable food systems A recent report by the Global Alliance for the Future of Food estimates the costs of transitioning to truly sustainable food systems at $430 billion to $500 billion annually. While public climate finance almost doubled between 2017 and 2022 the share allocated to food systems has dropped from 3% to 2.5%. Of that, only 1.5%, or about $9.1 billion, is invested in sustainable, agroecological food systems. In this podcast, our Head of CAP and Food, Melanie Muro talks to Olivia Riemer from TMG Think Tank for Sustainability and Torsten Hasforth from CONCITO about the challenges of financing this transition and explore existing tools and policy instruments such as True Cost Accounting and the Emissions Trading System. They also talk about Denmark, the first country in the world to set a climate tax on emissions from livestock, and investigate if other countries could adopt this model. 🎧 Listen to the podcast produced by us with the collaboration of our two #ThinkSustainableEurope members on: ▶️ Spotify - https://lnkd.in/eK7W2d6i ▶️ YouTube - https://lnkd.in/etRU7y9w More info and readings ⤵️ https://lnkd.in/eW9ABbA5 #SustainableFood #JustTransition #Finance
