🌎 New ICCA Report: Multiple Pathways to Climate Neutrality for the Chemical Industry The journey to climate neutrality isn’t a one-size-fits-all solution for the global chemical industry. The ICCA’s latest report, Pathways for the Global Chemical Industry to Climate Neutrality, reveals that multiple routes exist—each tailored to regional strengths and resources. Some pathways emphasise greater use of biomass, while others rely on carbon capture and storage (CCS) or carbon capture and utilization (CCU). This diversity allows each region to choose the path that best fits its unique landscape, ensuring a practical and efficient approach to emissions reduction. Key insights from the report include: Increased reliance on biomass and recycled materials across all pathways, though fossil feedstock and CCS remain necessary to meet demand. A technology-neutral approach that leaves all options on the table, paving the way for a cost-effective, climate-neutral future. This flexible model empowers the chemical industry to pursue climate neutrality in a way that meets both global goals and local needs. 🔗 Explore the full report to learn more about these tailored pathways: https://lnkd.in/eEUGSg3K #ClimateNeutrality #ChemicalIndustry #ParisAgreement

The journey ahead for the transition. of the chemical industry is challenging but possible. Together with Carbon Minds and ICIS we made this report with the intention to help policymakers in the different regions (depending on the resources available) understand what the chemical industry needs to achieve the climate goals. Thank you to all those involved.
The ICCA's latest report, Pathways for the Global Chemical Industry to Climate Neutrality identifies multiple pathways that reflect the unique strengths and resources of regions worldwide 🌍. https://lnkd.in/ehWYnFRn Key Insights from the Report: 🛣️ Multiple Pathways: Whether prioritizing biomass, carbon capture and storage (CCS), or carbon capture and utilization (CCU), every region can adopt solutions suited to its resources. However, all pathways share a common reliance on increasing the use of biomass, recycled materials, and low-emission energy. ⚙️ Technology Neutrality: By keeping all options on the table—biomass, low-emission hydrogen, and CCS—the industry can achieve climate neutrality at minimal cost to society. 🛠️ The Role of Enablers: From scaling up recycling rates to ensuring access to low-emission hydrogen, affordable energy, and sustainable biomass, a range of enablers is essential to achieve these goals. Challenges Ahead: ♻️Only 9% of global plastic waste is recycled—integrating chemical and mechanical recycling is crucial. 🌱 Biomass is a gamechanger but must be sourced sustainably to avoid unintended impacts. 💡 Low-emission hydrogen, affordable energy, and robust CCS policies are critical to enabling a resilient, low-carbon future. The chemical industry stands at the crossroads of innovation and transformation, and this report underscores its commitment to driving a climate-neutral future while supporting the Paris Agreement goals. 🌐 How can the chemical industry achieve climate neutrality by mid-century? The new ICCA report, Pathways for the Global Chemical Industry to Climate Neutrality, identifies five essential enablers for the sector’s journey toward climate neutrality: Increased Plastic Waste Access: With only 9% of global plastic waste recycled, scaling up recycling rates and strengthening waste management systems are critical steps. Sustainably Sourced Biomass: Sustainable biomass sourcing is key for a carbon-neutral feedstock, helping the industry avoid unintended environmental impacts. Low-Emission Hydrogen: Transitioning to low-emission hydrogen sources, like green and blue hydrogen, is vital for sustainable production. Fossil Feedstock & Carbon Storage: As we shift toward bio-based and circular models, regulated carbon storage and fossil feedstocks will remain necessary in the near term. Affordable Low-Emission Energy: Access to cost-effective, reliable low-emission energy is essential, especially for energy-intensive processes. 🔎 Discover the full report for a comprehensive look at these enabling factors and the pathway to a climate-neutral future: https://lnkd.in/eEUGSg3K #ClimateNeutrality #ChemicalIndustry #ParisAgreement

No single organization or country can tackle the challenge of plastic pollution alone. Effective solutions require collaboration across the public, private, and civil society sectors. A global agreement focused on national action plans, guidance on designing products for circularity, and targeted capacity-building is key to preventing pollution and fostering sustainable practices worldwide. We can build a circular economy where plastics remain valuable resources, not waste. Learn more: https://lnkd.in/eAdK6uHV #PlasticTreaty #CircularEconomy #Sustainability #WasteManagement

Government-imposed production caps on plastics could have unintended consequences across industries – from healthcare to aerospace, and even renewable energy. These policies may hinder sustainable development, increase costs, and result in substitutions with greater environmental impacts. Ultimately, consumers least able to afford increased costs for goods may be impacted most. We need to focus on innovative solutions that drive circularity without stifling progress. #PlasticCircularity #PlasticsTreaty #CircularEconomy Learn more: https://lnkd.in/eCxXsap7

Microplastics: Insights, Research, and Global Solutions More than ever, we are hearing and learning more about microplastics. Researchers, policymakers, and citizens want a better understanding of their potential impact on health and the environment and how best to prevent microplastics from entering the environment. Despite scientific authorities like the FDA and WHO asserting the current evidence does not demonstrate harm to humans scientific bodies agree that more research is needed to assess potential risks. Industry and academia are stepping up, with nearly $15M committed to funding research and initiatives like Operation Clean Sweep® to prevent pellet loss. A global agreement on plastics can enable a #CircularEconomy that reduces microplastics and #PlasticWaste. Learn more about the research we are supporting to better understand microplastics.
