🌎 New ICCA Report: Multiple Pathways to Climate Neutrality for the Chemical Industry The journey to climate neutrality isn’t a one-size-fits-all solution for the global chemical industry. The ICCA’s latest report, Pathways for the Global Chemical Industry to Climate Neutrality, reveals that multiple routes exist—each tailored to regional strengths and resources. Some pathways emphasise greater use of biomass, while others rely on carbon capture and storage (CCS) or carbon capture and utilization (CCU). This diversity allows each region to choose the path that best fits its unique landscape, ensuring a practical and efficient approach to emissions reduction. Key insights from the report include: Increased reliance on biomass and recycled materials across all pathways, though fossil feedstock and CCS remain necessary to meet demand. A technology-neutral approach that leaves all options on the table, paving the way for a cost-effective, climate-neutral future. 🌐 How can the chemical industry achieve climate neutrality by mid-century? The new ICCA report, Pathways for the Global Chemical Industry to Climate Neutrality, identifies five essential enablers for the sector’s journey toward climate neutrality: Increased Plastic Waste Access: With only 9% of global plastic waste recycled, scaling up recycling rates and strengthening waste management systems are critical steps. Sustainably Sourced Biomass: Sustainable biomass sourcing is key for a carbon-neutral feedstock, helping the industry avoid unintended environmental impacts. Low-Emission Hydrogen: Transitioning to low-emission hydrogen sources, like green and blue hydrogen, is vital for sustainable production. Fossil Feedstock & Carbon Storage: As we shift toward bio-based and circular models, regulated carbon storage and fossil feedstocks will remain necessary in the near term. Government-imposed production caps on plastics could have unintended consequences across industries – from healthcare to aerospace, and even renewable energy. These policies may hinder sustainable development, increase costs, and result in substitutions with greater environmental impacts.     Ultimately, consumers least able to afford increased costs for goods may be impacted most. Microplastics: Insights, Research, and Global Solutions    More than ever, we are hearing and learning more about microplastics. Researchers, policymakers, and citizens want a better understanding of their potential impact on health and the environment and how best to prevent microplastics from entering the environment.  Despite scientific authorities like the FDA and WHO asserting the current evidence does not demonstrate harm to humans scientific bodies agree that more research is needed to assess potential risks. Industry and academia are stepping up, with nearly $15M committed to funding research and initiatives like Operation Clean Sweep® to prevent pellet loss.     A global agreement on plastics can enable a #CircularEconomy that reduces microplastics and #PlasticWaste. Unlocking Funding for Waste Management Infrastructure    To tackle #PlasticPollution, a #CircularEconomy is essential, but it requires investment in waste management infrastructure.
