📣 122 journalists and media workers, including 14 women, have been killed in 2024, according to the annual Killed List released by the #IFJ on 31 December. We deplore 2024 as one of the deadliest years for journalists and reiterate our determination to see an International Convention for the Protection of Journalists adopted by the United Nations as a matter of urgency. 🔴 The war in #Gaza and Lebanon represents 58% of all journalists killed this year. This grim data shows that the deadliest countries for journalists in 2024 are Palestine (64 deaths), Pakistan (7 deaths), Lebanon (6 deaths) and Sudan (6 deaths). 🎙️ #IFJ General Secretary Anthony Bellanger said: "Our thoughts are with the families and friends of 122 media professionals killed this year. Behind this high figure, there are 122 truncated stories. To guarantee that the deaths of journalists do not go unpunished and to put an end to this scourge once and for all, we urge UN Member States to take steps to ensure the adoption of a binding Convention on the safety of journalists. Such a Convention would aim to end the journalist’s deaths and injuries that sadly occur every year." ➡️ https://lnkd.in/d7SxAAYW International Federation of Journalists Asia-Pacific European Federation of Journalists Federación Internacional de Periodistas - Oficina Regional para América Latina y el Caribe Tim Dawson Pamela Moriniere Nisrine Salameh Nadir SENHADJI Quentin de Martene Bernard Vanmuysewinkel Natàlia Queralt Piñas

#Iran: Italian journalist Cecilia Sala was arrested by the Iranian police in Tehran on 19 December, while on assignment, according to the Italian Foreign Ministry. We join our affiliate, the Federazione Nazionale Stampa Italiana, in calling on the Iranian authorities to release the journalist immediately and unconditionally. 📣 "We deplore Iran's tactics of imprisoning foreign journalists in order to get something in return. Our colleague Cecilia Sala, who was in the country on assignment, is the latest victim of this macabre practice. We call on the international community to put pressure on the Iranian authorities to release the journalist immediately," said #IFJ General Secretary Anthony Bellanger. #JournalismIsNotACrime #EndImpunity

📣 #IFJ leaders met with twenty Yemeni journalists and members of the Yemeni Journalists' Syndicate (YJS) exiled in Egypt to discuss strategies to draw attention to the difficult situation of journalists in #Yemen, how justice can be made at the international level and the specific challenges that Yemeni media workers face in exile. Among the participants, there were journalists Tawfiq Al-Mansoori and Abdulakhleq Amran, who were sentenced to death by a Houthi court in Yemen for their journalistic work, but were released as part of a prisoner exchange in April 2023 after spending many years behind bars. Our Secretary General, Anthony Bellanger, greeted them and was pleased to see them free, as the IFJ had long campaigned for their release. Our commitment to Yemeni journalists is unwavering ✊🏾 #JournalismIsNotACrime #EndImpunity #Journalism #UnionStrong #UnionWin Nadir SENHADJI
