About us

RECLAIM (reclaiming.eu) is a newly established NGO that works to amplify the voices of European civil society in their struggle to promote democratic, just and inclusive societies at home and abroad. Our goals are to counter democratic backsliding and ensure that European civil society, in all its diversity, can continue to work unhindered. RECLAIM is committed to acting against unjustified restrictions affecting European human rights, democracy and humanitarian groups and their counterparts in the Global South. We want to ensure an operating environment in Europe where civil society can continue to thrive. Working in partnerships is critical to us. To do this, RECLAIM brings together the voices and concerns of different civic sectors and support their meaningful engagement with EU institutions.

    🚨 𝗕𝘂𝗹𝗴𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗮'𝘀 𝗔𝗻𝘁𝗶-𝗟𝗚𝗕𝗧𝗤𝗜+ 𝗟𝗮𝘄: 𝗪𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗶𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗘𝗨'𝘀 𝗢𝘂𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗴𝗲? 💬 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁’𝘀 𝗵𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗲𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴?
Last August, Bulgaria adopted a controversial anti-LGBTQI+ law, banning so-called “LGBTQI+ propaganda” in schools. This law, echoing Russia’s infamous legislation, makes Bulgaria the second EU state after Hungary to directly target LGBTQI+ children. The pro-Russia Revival party introduced the law. Shockingly, mainstream parties belonging to S&D, EPP, and Renew backed it and helped it pass. ⚠️ 𝗦𝗽𝗼𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗱𝗼𝘂𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗮𝗿𝗱𝘀?
Hungary faced strong EU backlash, including the freezing of €700M in funds. But Bulgaria? Nothing - despite research by RECLAIM indicating that over €650M in EU education funds to Bulgaria should be blocked.    🔍 𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗺𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀? • 𝗕𝘂𝗹𝗴𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗮 𝗶𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝘀𝘁 𝗘𝗨 𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗿𝘆 𝘁𝗼 𝗯𝗲 𝗟𝗚𝗕𝗧𝗤𝗜+: According to the EU Fundamental Rights Agency (FRA), one in two LGBTIQ+ people are victims of discrimination in Bulgaria. • 𝗔 𝗯𝘂𝗹𝗹𝘆𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗲𝗽𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗺𝗶𝗰 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁’𝘀 𝗴𝗲𝘁𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝘀𝗲: Still according to FRA, 72% of LGBTQI+ people in Bulgaria experienced school bullying – that’s 20 points more than five years ago. • 𝗗𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲𝗿𝗼𝘂𝘀 𝗽𝗿𝗲𝗰𝗲𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀: The personal information and home addresses of teachers opposing the law have been leaked to the public. When similar ‘doxing’ happened in Russia, it ended with LGBTQI+ activists being stabbed. 🚨 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗘𝗨 𝗺𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗮𝗰𝘁!
European party leaders must hold their members accountable for their shameful votes, and the Commission must initiate infringement proceedings against Bulgaria. Double standards should not be tolerated. 📢 𝗦𝗽𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗱 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝗮 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗵𝘂𝗺𝗮𝗻 𝗿𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝘀! The Orban regime's so-called "sovereignty law" is only the latest, most flagrant example of a world-wide trend to brand civil society organisations as the enemy within, traitors, political stooges etc. (not limited to authoritarians sadly). We don't have to put up with this. Help the fabulous Reclaim in their push to get EU member states to stand up for democratic values and reject this odious law. See more below 👇

🎙️𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗙𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗙𝗿𝗲𝗲 𝗠𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗮: 𝗘𝘂𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗮𝗻 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗶𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝘃𝘀 𝗛𝘂𝗻𝗴𝗮𝗿𝘆 𝗼𝗻 𝗞𝗹𝘂𝗯𝗿𝗮́𝗱𝗶𝗼́ 𝗖𝗮𝘀𝗲 🗓️ 𝐖𝐡𝐞𝐧? Monday, 2nd December - 14:30 📍 𝐖𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐞? European Court of Justice, Luxemburg 📂 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭’𝐬 𝐚𝐭 𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐤𝐞? In 2020, Hungary’s Media Council refused to renew Klubrádió’s FM broadcasting rights and imposed rules that effectively forced Klubrádió off the air. European Commission argues this violates EU laws on media freedom, fair competition, and the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights. 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐢𝐬 𝐊𝐥𝐮𝐛𝐫𝐚́𝐝𝐢𝐨́? Klubrádió was Hungary’s last independent radio station on the FM frequency. For 19 years, it gave a platform to critical voices and held open discussions on political and public issues, often challenging Prime Minister Viktor Orbán’s government. Once a nationwide broadcast, its reach was reduced to Budapest before regulators—citing minor infractions—revoked its license. Since then, it has operated solely online. 𝐖𝐡𝐲 𝐢𝐭 𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐬: This isn’t just about one radio station. Orbán has been labelled a 𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐟𝐫𝐞𝐞𝐝𝐨𝐦 𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐝𝐚𝐭𝐨𝐫 by Reporters Without Borders for turning Hungary’s media into a government mouthpiece. Klubrádió’s case is part of a larger fight for press freedom in Hungary and across the EU. If the court rules against Hungary, it could force changes to media laws, fair access to FM frequencies, and renewed hope for independent journalism in the country. 👉 𝐖𝐚𝐧𝐭 𝐭𝐨 𝐟𝐨𝐥𝐥𝐨𝐰 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐜𝐚𝐬𝐞?  Stay tuned here and on BlueSky (@reclaim-eu.bsky.social)! #Klubradio #MediaFreedom #RuleOfLaw #EUlaw

Last Tuesday we had the chance to attend the historic CJEU hearing on Hungary's (shameful) LGBTIQ+ "propaganda" ban. We have unpacked the key moments and discussions here (and in RECLAIM just created BSKY: https://lnkd.in/dii-zcsm) ⬇️ ⬇️ #CJEU #LGBTIQrights

🔴 𝗨𝗿𝗴𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝘂𝗽𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗲: 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗖𝗼𝘂𝗿𝘁 𝗕𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗹𝗲 𝗢𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝗛𝘂𝗻𝗴𝗮𝗿𝘆'𝘀 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗮𝗴𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗮 𝗟𝗮𝘄 𝗕𝗲𝗴𝗶𝗻𝘀 ⚖️ Why this case matters and how to follow it? Here is what you need to know about the largest human rights court battle in EU history next week. 🌈 🔍 𝗔𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗖𝗮𝘀𝗲 𝗖-𝟳𝟲𝟵/𝟮𝟮: 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗶𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝘃. 𝗛𝘂𝗻𝗴𝗮𝗿𝘆 Next Tuesday, on 𝗡𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿 𝟭𝟵, the Court of Justice of the European Union will hold a landmark hearing on Hungary's Anti-LGBTIQ+ Law, modelled after Putin's 2013 propaganda law. Under the pretence of protecting children, the law restricts LGBTIQ+ rights by: •       Censoring inclusive sex education •       Equating LGBTIQ+ people with paedophilia •       Blocking adoption for LGBTQI+ couples •       Restricting LGBTQI+ content in media and advertising •       Restricting the selling of books with LGBTQI+ characters . ⚖️ 𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗰𝗮𝘀𝗲 𝗺𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀: This is the EU's largest human rights court battle to date, uniting 16 Member States, the European Parliament, and the European Commission, against Hungary. The Full Chamber, which adjudicates only 0.1% of cases, will decide the outcome. A ruling against Hungary could: — Force other EU Member States to repeal similar laws (e.g. Bulgaria, Lithuania) — Deter countries considering such laws (e.g. Slovakia, Romania, Italy). — Impact EU accession talks for countries with anti-LGBTIQ+ laws (e.g. Georgia).
