The European Commission is finally expanding the scope of the conditionality principle to all occupying management functions within the EU Commission, responding to the Society of European Affairs Professionals ‘s long-standing demands. As such, according to Article 4 of Commission Decision (EU) 2024/3082, “Commission staff holding management functions shall meet only those interest representatives, which are registered in the transparency register in as much as they fall under the scope of the Interinstitutional Agreement”. This is a wonderful step in the right direction to turn the EU Transparency Register into a real “mandatory” register for lobbyists and EU officials alike; and a very gratifying measure after 3 years of campaigning for it. On 14 October 2024, SEAP hosted a fascinating event on "Digital Political Campaigning and the Power of Social Media", examining how digital platforms are transforming political engagement. Panellists were MEP Zala Tomašič, Dave Keating (France 24), Philipp Schulmeister (European Parliament), and Alice Stollmeyer (Defend Democracy). SEAP Board member Yiannis Korkovelos moderated the lively discussion. The speakers discussed the importance of authenticity in campaigning, highlighting the use of viral grassroots activities and platform-specific content to engage voters across all ages. The panellists discussed the opportunities and threats arising from the growing influence of non-traditional media, emphasising maintaining journalistic integrity in the face of these shifts. Disinformation was identified as a major issue, with calls for stronger European digital infrastructure to counter foreign interference. The session concluded by emphasising the need to promote digital literacy and online safety measures across Europe, especially in light of emerging AI-driven threats. Thank you very much for participating in our event yesterday, Jana Turnschek. We are pleased that you enjoyed it and that the outcome of the discussion will be useful for your work.
Yesterday, I had the pleasure of attending an insightful event on the power of social media and digital political campaigns, hosted by the Society of European Affairs Professionals. With a brilliant panel of experts, including Dave Keating (Brussels Correspondent, FRANCE 24), Philipp Schulmeister (Director for Campaigns, European Parliament), Alice Stollmeyer (Executive Director, Defend Democracy), and Zala Tomašič (MEP), we explored the opportunities and challenges social media presents to democracies, from both institutional and political perspectives. A key focus of the debate—and something I am deeply passionate about—was disinformation. This critical issue fueled dynamic discussions both during the session and afterward at the reception, where we exchanged ideas on how to tackle its growing influence. 💡I am grateful for the engaging conversations that not only inspired fresh perspectives but also allowed me to reflect on my own experience coordinating the EEAS’ European elections outreach campaign. #Communication #SocialMedia #Disinformation #EU #Campaigns #PublicAffairs

Thanks for joining our event yesterday, Sophia Papagiannopoulou. We are happy that you found the discussion insightful.
📣 Yesterday, I had the privilege of attending a fascinating event, hosted by the Society of European Affairs Professionals. It focused on the intersection of social media and political campaigning, especially in light of the recent 2024 European elections. The discussions highlighted how digital platforms are reshaping the political landscape, allowing candidates to engage directly with voters while also raising crucial concerns about misinformation and disinformation. The panel featured distinguished speakers, including: - Dave Keating from FRANCE 24 - Philipp Schulmeister, Director for Campaigns at the European Parliament - Alice Stollmeyer, Executive Director of Defend Democracy - Zala Tomašič, Member of the European Parliament Each speaker offered unique insights into the democratising potential of social media in policy-making and the risks involved. After the event, I had the opportunity to engage in meaningful conversations with some of the speakers, which deepened my understanding of the complexities at play. 💡 It’s clear that social media is not just a tool for politicians but a critical component for public affairs professionals across sectors. I’m excited to see how these dynamics will continue to evolve! #PoliticalCampaigning #SocialMedia #SEAP #PublicAffairs
